Pia’s Picks: a new maritime look for your soft furnishings

Although typical maritime patterns thrive on their white-and-blue simplicity, I much prefer stripes in other colour combinations. Not only that, but they offer a certain advantage.

Nautical stripes are a classic pattern, evoking that holiday feeling – even if my own vacation has long since been and gone (or is yet to start). With this in mind, all I want to do right now is cover the place in stripy soft furnishings.

But just like a ship, striped looks sometimes go off course. Although they’re easy to create, their cool colours mean they can quickly look uninviting. And since the pattern has been around for so long, it can also look pretty samey. This considered, I’m all the more taken with Broste Copenhagen’s collection of soft outdoor furnishings. With their unconventional colour combinations, the cushions and seat pads have put a new spin on the classic pattern. A breath of fresh maritime air for both interiors and exteriors.

The stools and designs from Ferm Living’s Grand Cushion range as well as Oyoy’s Lina range are especially easy on the eye. This is because they juxtapose white with a caramel hue, or even omit sterile whites altogether.

Designed with smooth caramel and white stripes, this Lina footstool blends into any interior decorated with natural tones.

Journey Living’s Montalcino bed linen may be white, but it proves how beautiful classic stripes can look when they get an update. Here, a warm pastel colour is paired with blue and white stripes. This colour combination makes the bed look much more inviting. After all, I tend to associate the colour blue with cool water, which, holiday feeling or not, I don’t want to dive into at the end of the day.
