The fashion world is brimming with terminology – the meaning of which is sometimes far from obvious. The current viral trend? Wrong-shoe theory. Here’s what it’s all about.

If you hang out on Instagram or TikTok from time to time, you’ve probably come across the concept of «wrong-shoe theory». It’s the fashion world’s current go-to for matching your footwear to your outfit. So, how is it the wrong shoes can actually be just right?

Example #1: pleated pants + thong sandals
The stylist breaks up her chic combo of shirt and pleated pants with a pair of white thong sandals that exude summer and beach vacation vibes.

Example #2: maxi skirt + Mary Janes or ballerinas
Sandals paired with a skirt is a summer classic. Allison Bornstein suggests replacing the sandals with something unexpected – closed-toe loafers like Mary Janes or ballerinas – to make the outfit more exciting and elegant.

Example 3: denim skirt or shorts + loafers
Denim shorts exude casualness. If you want to make them look more sophisticated and mature, the «wrong shoes» – in this case loafers – are your best ally.

In the «Fashion Lingo» series, I try to shed light on the dark that is language in the fashion industry. If you occasionally end up lost in translation, I’m sure I can help – drop me a line in the comments.
