What are balloon sleeves?

Ball... what? In the "What is it?" series, I explain fashion terms that you've probably heard of but don't know exactly what they mean.
As soon as someone gives me an irritated look when I talk shop about the latest fashion trends, it's time again for "What is it?". In this series, I explain fashion glossaries that you don't necessarily need to know, but which will help you score points with fashion enthusiasts or in small talk. This episode is all about the word "balloon sleeves".
During the Renaissance, clothing was often taken to extremes with lavish stylistic devices. In addition to extravagant shoes, women and men could show off with puffed sleeves. A precursor to the balloon sleeves we know today. These are heavily puffed sleeves that stand out voluminously and end with a narrow hem at the wrist.
Today, balloon sleeves are used when fashion designers want to add an exciting twist to simple everyday basics such as blouses, shirts and jumpers. This turns a simple shirt into a statement piece that attracts everyone's attention. Contrary to expectations, it will make you look anything but girly. Attributes such as "feminine" and "chic" are more appropriate. As long as you avoid braids and pink accessories.

How to
Jumpers with balloon sleeves are particularly trendy at the moment. My favourite way to wear them is with slim-fitting, high-waisted skirts or trousers. The high-waist waistband and slim cut create a beautiful silhouette. Because the sleeves are already statement enough, I hold back on accessories and limit myself to minimalist pieces. Goes well with: trainers, ankle boots or loafers.
For a relaxed yet elegant office look, I go for a balloon-sleeved blouse, ankle boots and leather trousers or dark blue jeans. If you prefer to wear dresses, I recommend black ankle boots or boots and tights in the same colour. In your free time, trainers or tough combat boots also go well with the one-piece suit.
