Styling update: your urban bedroom
We spend about a third of our life in bed – mostly in our own bedroom. With this in mind, it’s worth investing in your bedroom and turning your sleeping area into a cosy and comfortable place that offers you a great night’s sleep. We’ve looked into the urban trend and have come up with our own twist on creating an urban bedroom.
If your bed is comfortable and clean, you’ve got the basics right. Yet, creating a real sleeping paradise isn’t as simple as that. Considering you spend more time in your bedroom than in any other part of your home, this room deserves special attention and care. Imagine you’re coming home after a long day. Leaving the noise of the city with its blaring horns, loud police car sirens and screeching tram brakes behind you, all you want is to relax. How better to do this than in a fresh, modern bedroom with factory hall flair to give it a touch of «laissez faire»? You want it to look as if you didn’t spend much time thinking about it (even though you spent ages searching for the right items and colours). We recommend a cool and relaxed colour range with blue, grey and beige to help you calm down in the evening. Does this sound good to you? Great, the following tips will help you turn your bedroom into the stylish sleeping oasis you need:
Do's
- Dark colours: Whether its textiles or wall paint, don’t be afraid of using dark colours, even in a small room. Cold colours also work well in a bedroom. Blue and grey tones have a particularly calming effect, which can help you wind down after a hectic day.
- «Calm» textiles: Go for duvet covers in plain colours or small patterns. If you insist in having large, wild patterns, make sure you keep the rest of the room simple and calm.
- Mixture of materials: It’s important that the textures and surfaces you use work together in harmony. Concrete, for instance, forms a great contrast to soft textiles and supports the industrial look.
- Rugs: Who wants to experience a cold shock when they get up in the morning? Exactly, nobody. This is why a rug next to your bed is such a great idea – especially in winter.
- Incandescent light bulbs: They radiate vintage flair that you might experience in an industrial environment. As chain of lights or individual bulbs on or over a table, incandescent light bulbs make for a cosy atmosphere.
Don'ts
- Missing colour concept: Define no more than three colours that you want to work with in your room. More colours will look too busy or even childish.
- Dust traps: The less knick-knack is around you, the faster you will fall asleep. Soft toys take up too much space in your bed and are hardly ever a winner with your date. Put them away.
- Cable spaghetti: Nobody likes the look of loose cables and power strips lying around. Cable boxes are a great solution; they’re convenient and they look pretty.
- Dirty washing: A laundry basket with a lid is an absolute must for your bedroom. When it comes to shoes, don’t even take them into your bedroom. If there’s no other way, make sure to store them away in a wardrobe where they can’t be seen or smelled.

«Get the Look» – these elements shouldn’t be missing in your bedroom:
When I’m not busy putting together home décor themes or planning marketing activities for Galaxus, I enjoy decorating my home with things I love and starting DIY projects I finish all too rarely. The inspiration I get comes from blogs, magazines and travels. My favourite home living styles: Nautical, Scandinavian and Nordic.
