What exactly is Argyle?

Argy... what? In the "What is it?" series, I explain fashion terms that you've probably heard of but don't know what they actually mean.

As soon as someone gives me an irritated look when I talk shop about the latest fashion trends, it's time again for "What is it?". In this series, I explain fashion glossary, which you don't necessarily need to know, but which will help you score points with anyone interested in fashion or in small talk. The third episode is about: Argyle.

Argyle is the traditional diamond pattern that you may recognise from jumpers and the like. This autumn, the diamond pattern is making a comeback. The Agyle jumper is even replacing the long-celebrated Norwegian jumper. You can safely put these away in the moth cupboard, at least this season. I'll never forget how my grandmother gave me a black cardigan with coloured diamonds 25 years ago because she liked it. But I didn't. But as she always has the last word, she bought it for me anyway. For Grandma's sake, I put the scratchy cardigan on once. After that, the piece went straight into her wardrobe. Today I think back on it wistfully. I have so many ideas of how I would style this it-piece. Designer Victoria Beckham and fashion label Preen by Thornton Bregazzi have inspired me with their latest collection.

It's the styling that makes all the difference, because the spiked pieces only look cool when combined correctly. That's also the reason why Ugly Dad trainers, Norwegian jumpers, jumpers and the like always look so staid on our dads. All you need for the right combination is a bit of flair and courage. Pair the pattern with animal prints or denim culottes, for example. You can also go for deconstruction, such as two interwoven jumpers or asymmetric cuts. If you still prefer timeless basics, add the right twist with accessories such as rough patent leather boots, a micro bag or XL earrings.

When I’m not exploring the depths of the sea as an open water diver, I enjoy plunging into the world of fashion. On the streets of Paris, Milan and New York is where I keep my eyes peeled for the latest trends. And I’ll show you how to take them from the catwalk to your everyday life.
