What exactly is Argyle?

Bag... what? In the "What is it?" series, I explain fashion terms that you've probably heard of but don't know what they actually mean.
As soon as someone gives me an irritated look when I talk shop about the latest fashion trends, it's time again for "What is it?". In this series, I'll explain fashion glossaries that you don't necessarily need to know, but which you can use to score points with anyone interested in fashion or in small talk. The fourth instalment is about: Baguette.
A baguette bag is nothing more than an elongated evening bag with shoulder handles. These are so short that the bag just barely fits under the arm like the French breadstick. The baguette in the teaser image has been embellished with a golden chain handle.
The Italian fashion house Fendi launched the first baguette in 1997, laying the foundation for this fashion concept. Designer Silvia Venturini Fendi was actually inspired by a Parisette and the nonchalant way French women wear them under their arms. At the time, nobody expected that this bag would characterise the nineties. She celebrated her big breakthrough with guest appearances in the third season of the hit series "Sex and The City".
This is not a bag, it's a baguette!
The baguette was reportedly the first designer bag ever to appear on the TV set and was not to be the last. Luxury houses recognised the potential of the series and wanted to be a part of it immediately. In the wake of the fashion hype surrounding the nineties, it comes as no surprise that the bag is currently celebrating its comeback. If you're lucky, you'll have a baguette stashed in your wardrobe like influencer and author Lucy Williams.
