Bananas, avocados, onions – many foods shouldn’t be kept in the fridge. But you probably don’t want to keep them on your countertop either. The solution? Hanging them from the ceiling or the wall. Read on to find out how.
«The fruit bowl always gets in my way,» my friend says while she’s kneading dough in her kitchen. It’s a pretty bowl, no doubt about that, but it’s taking up much-needed countertop space. I know that problem all too well.
The thing is, bananas, avocados, onions and citrus fruit are best stored at room temperature. They shouldn’t go in the fridge, and they really don’t belong on the counter either. Usually, the only space that’s left is the air. So let’s find out how to make use of it.
A basket hanging from the ceiling takes up no countertop space at all. How about repurposing hanging flower pots? Just put bananas and onions into them loosely or stack apples and oranges on top of each other. In a hanging basket, fruit’s exposed to air from all sides, which helps it ripen more evenly than it would in a closed container. On top of that, a basket full of fruit looks very pretty.

If you’d rather not drill into the ceiling, take a look around the room to find some free wall space. Wall-mounted baskets or multi-tier wire racks can be attached to the back of a cabinet, a wall or even a pillar. A multi-tier model also allows you to organise fruits by type – bananas on top, citrus fruits in the middle and the rest at the bottom, for instance. I promise you’ll never be rummaging through squashed fruits in a bowl again.

Back to my friend: We decided on a wall-mounted basket. It was installed in no time and now, the first thing you see when you enter her kitchen is beautifully arranged fruits and vegetables. And the countertop’s free to be used.
