How to change the look of your interiors with patterns

I want a holiday home by the sea. But knowing Zurich will always be miles away from the sea and my own house isn’t in sight yet either, the least I can do is create a maritime atmosphere in my home.

Over the years, I’ve collected quite a few souvenirs from my beach holidays. I was hoping they’d create a holiday home atmosphere. However, these items always looked out of place in my city apartment in Zurich. Why? A starfish or a glass with coloured sand just didn’t go with the rest of my flat that I’ve decorated in a simple and Scandinavian style. Sure, mixing styles is fine, but only if it works. It’s a balancing act. I've found a way to master it: combining my items with stripes creates a great beach house look. Stripes are unbeatable in spreading maritime flair.

You’ve never liked patterns? Start off with simple prints such as stripes. That’s what I did. Stripes are elegant and discreet and manage to create structure. Pick up a few striped accessories such as a tray or a scented candle and combine them with your interior. Small changes are all it needs to give your home a new and fresh look without you having to change the furniture.

Stripes radiate retro charm and are easy on the eyes – even wide ones. Go for colours that are already featured in your room so the stripes blend in well. Or choose the classic navy blue and white, which is versatile. No matter whether you prefer pastel colours or black and white combinations, the choice and effect are impressive.

A bit of variety in terms of prints is good for any interior, otherwise your home will start to bore you. Textiles such as tablecloths are also great ways to make a table look more festive. Striped textiles go especially well with outdoor garden furniture and bathrooms. At least, the water from your shower isn’t far away then. 😉
