Galaxus wallflowers: Rite in the Rain?

On the one hand, you have stars and starlets. On the other, you have the bench players. And in the Galaxus product range, it’s no different. Some items live out a shadowy existence, unnoticed by the public. Like this «all-weather pen» by Rite in the Rain.
In the 1960s, Andy Warhol coined the expression «15 minutes of fame», thus suggesting that in a future world, everyone would be world famous for a little while. Anyone and everyone? Not quite. There are some who never make it into the limelight. Not even for fifteen minutes. Like this «all-weather pen» by Rite in the Rain. But that’s going to change now, at least for a few minutes. It’s not like it has to be 15.

Huh?
I don’t get it – from the manufacturer’s name to how the product is used. This all-weather pen from Rite in the Rain is supposed to be a biro for every occasion and every weather. Shouldn’t the brand then be called «Write in the Rain», or at least «Right in the Rain»? I wouldn’t mind «Ride in the Rain» either. But «Rite in the Rain» makes no sense at all. Or is there some hidden word play I’m not getting?
According to the manufacturer, the pressurised ink cartridge works in temperatures from -30F to 250F and under water up to 35 ft deep. Let’s convert these numbers. The temperature corresponds to -1.1°C to 121.1°C and the depth is 10.67 metres. Well, at an air temperature of 121 degrees, you’re hardly going to be writing down anything. And who takes notes while diving at a depth of 10 metres? Exactly.
No wonder nobody’s using this pen
If you type «survival tool» into our shop’s search bar, you’ll get over 200 products to choose from (at the time of writing). These are generally sorted according to relevance. In other words, you’ll see the most relevant survival tools first and then it goes steadily downhill. All the way down to number 261. You can find out how products are sorted and displayed here. Simply put, it all comes down to:
- search query accuracy
- users’ search and shopping habits
- availability and estimated delivery time
- popularity and novelty
- attractiveness and price
With all these criteria taken into account, the all-weather pen by Rite in the Rain is scribbling onto nobody’s notebook. In other words, no-one seems to have put the outdoor pen on their survival essentials list.
The Galaxus range is home to products that nobody sees, nobody knows and nobody wants. But even these bench players deserve a little attention. That’s why I’ve taken it upon myself to showcase our Galaxus wallflowers from time to time.
