Galaxus wallflowers: this air mattress has fallen flat

On the one hand, you have stars and starlets. On the other, you have the bench players. And in the Galaxus product range, it’s no different. Some items live out a shadowy existence, unnoticed by the public. Such as the «Avocado» pool float by Swim Essential

In the 1960s, Andy Warhol coined the expression «15 minutes of fame», thus suggesting that in a future world, everyone would be world famous for a little while. Anyone and everyone? Not quite. There are some who never make it into the limelight. Not even for fifteen minutes. Such as this pool float by Swim Essential. But that’s going to change now, at least for a few minutes. It’s not like it has to be 15.

This avocado’s fallen flat

Maybe it’s because of the bad reputation avocados have. Once hailed a superfood, it’s now decried as a climate killer. On the one hand, a load of CO₂ is emitted when they’re imported from overseas. On the other hand, cultivating the fruit in Europe – in Spain, let’s say – guzzles vast amounts of water. One tree alone needs about 50 litres a day. But it’s not just that. To produce avocados, colonies of bees are driven by truck from plantation to plantation. The bees are released, pollinate the fields and are then carted along the motorway to the next plantation.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, one avocado has around 440 calories and 47 grammes of fat. With an ideal daily intake of 2,000 calories and a total of 65 grammes of fat, one avocado already covers over 70 per cent of our total fat intake and about a quarter of the calories.

No wonder it’s not making waves

If you type «pool floats» into our shop’s search bar, you’ll get 608 products to choose from (at the time of writing). These are generally sorted according to relevance. In other words, you’ll see the most relevant pool floats first and then it goes steadily downhill, all the way down to number 608. You can find out how products are sorted and displayed here. Simply put, it all comes down to:

  • search query accuracy
  • users’ search and shopping habits
  • availability and estimated delivery time
  • popularity and novelty
  • attractiveness and price

With all these criteria taken into account, this avocado by Swim Essentials has drifted off to the bottom of the pool float popularity scale and doesn’t seem to be tickling anyone’s fancy. In other words, the avocado mattress isn’t particularly relevant, despite its attractive price and delivery deadline. Maybe it’s because of the massive carbon footprint, the water consumption or the bees. But maybe it’s because an avocado just looks ridiculous in a pool or on the beach.

The Galaxus range is home to products that nobody sees, nobody knows and nobody wants. But even these bench players deserve a little attention. That’s why I’ve taken it upon myself to showcase our Galaxus wallflowers from time to time.
