A Dutch oven is a thick-walled cooking pot made of cast iron with a snug-fitting lid. In Australia, it is called a "Camp oven," "Cocotte" in France, "casserole dish" in England, "Potje" in South Africa, and "Sac" in the Baltic countries.

The pot has three legs for cooking over an open fire. Cast iron has the advantage of very high thermal conductivity and is excellent for searing.
