Coffee is a hot drink and stimulant prepared with hot water from the roasted and ground beans of the coffee bush. As a caffeinated beverage, it has concentration and performance-enhancing properties.

The coffee shrub from the Rubiaceae family is the parent plant of coffee. The most widely grown coffee varieties in the world are Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora, which is also usually referred to simply as "Robusta". Arabica is actually a hybrid of Coffea eugenioides and Coffe canephora and has been known since the 7th century in Ethiopia. Countries like Brazil, Colombia and Ethiopia are nowadays known for their Arabica coffees. This type of coffee accounts for about 60-70% of global coffee consumption. Arabica coffee tastes reminiscent of subtle, fruity and complex flavors and has a higher sugar content. Robusta coffee, on the other hand, often tastes dark chocolatey, nutty and somewhat bitter. This type of coffee is mainly grown in countries such as Vietnam, India and Indonesia and accounts for approximately 30-40% of the world's coffee volume.

Nowadays, coffee comes in different varieties. Depending on what kind of coffee machine you have, you need the appropriate type of coffee. For filter machines you need ground coffee beans in powder form. For fully automatic coffee machines and portafilter machines, the beans are ground either in the machine or via a coffee grinder. Whole coffee beans are required for this. For capsule machines such as Nespresso or Nescafé Dolce Gusto, there are coffee capsules that contain ground coffee. For pad systems like Senseo, you need coffee pods. If you don't have a machine at home, you can also simply use instant coffee to pour hot water into your cup and quickly prepare an aromatic coffee.
