Wonders never cease! Bakery publishes recipe for cupcake from Sex and the City

«Sex and the City» is back. And, right on time for the series reboot featuring three of the four original actresses, a bakery has released the recipe for the original Carrie cupcakes. Plus: drama between Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker.
New York, Bleecker Street, Magnolia Bakery, 9 July 2000: Carrie and Miranda are sitting outside the bakery discussing the aesthetic merits of Carrie’s crush, Aidan. As they fathom the profound mystery of Aidan – Carrie believes him to be «very cute» – they eat a cupcake.
And now, 7499 days later, we know exactly what Carrie, played by Sarah Jessica Parker (side note: best acting ever), was eating when she realised that she had a crush on Aidan.
Magnolia Bakery has published the recipe. Carrie’s chomping a «Vanilla Cupcake with Pink Pastel Vanilla Buttercream», the bakery informs the online magazine Insider. There’s even a marzipan flower on top of the cupcake, the bakery admits.
Fortunately, we only had to wait 7499 days for this. Just like for the reboot of the show.
The Carrie Cupcake: make it yourself
The mythical cupcake that once established the relationship between Aidan and Carrie is easy to make. The legendary pastry, like any cupcake, is made of two components: the cake base and the frosting.
But we're more ravenous than the Manolo Blahnik-wearing archetype of a generation that likes to express its female independence in the form of screeching and materialism. So, we're making not one cupcake, but 24. That way, you should be all set for the reboot launch party.
You’ll find a shopping list at the very bottom of the article.
The cake base tastes like vanilla
Here’s what you need for the cupcake batter:
- 603 g white flour
- 13.67 g baking powder
- 1.95 g baking soda
- 3.9 g salt
- 240 ml whole milk
- 120 ml sour cream
- 226 g butter, unsalted, room temperature
- 187.5 g sugar
- 13.67 g vanilla extract
- 4 egg whites
Once you’ve got over the shock of the ingredient list converted from U.S. units of measurement, you're ready to go:
- Preheat oven to 167.225 degrees Celsius.
- Place cupcake paper liner thingies in 24 cupcake baking cups.
- Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a bowl and set aside.
- In a second bowl, whisk together the milk and sour cream until no lumps remain.
- Beat the butter, sugar, and vanilla extract in a kitchen machine (for example, the KitchenAid) with the flat paddle attachment on medium speed until the mixture is light and fluffy. This should take about three to five minutes. Make sure you mix in any deposits around the edge of the bowl as well.
- On medium speed, slowly add in the egg whites and blend until uniform. Make sure you mix in any deposits around the edge of the bowl as well.
- On slow speed, slowly add in the flour mixture. Then add the milk mixture. Mix until a uniform mass is formed.
- Divide the batter among the 24 cupcake moulds.
- Bake for 20 to 22 minutes
The frosting... also tastes of vanilla
Now that we have our cupcakes, we still need what actually makes the cupcake a cupcake. Namely, the frosting. This buttercream frosting is supposed to be creamy and sweet.
- 226 g butter, unsalted, room temperature
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 402 g powdered sugar
- 3 to 4 tbsp whole milk
- Pink food colouring
- Marzipan flowers
Here's how to make it:
- Using an electric mixer, beat the butter in a bowl until creamy. This should take 3 to 4 minutes.
- Add vanilla extract and mix for one minute.
- Scrape off any residue on the bottom and sides of the bowl and stir in.
- With the mixer on low, slowly add in the powdered sugar.
- Once you’ve added about three quarters of the sugar, the mixture will become thicker and less wet.
- Add the milk. Be careful: start with less milk rather than just emptying all the milk into the bowl. The rule is: as much as necessary, as little as possible. The goal is to end up with a stiff cream.
- Mix for another 1 to 2 minutes.
- Add the food colouring.
- Stir.
- Spread the frosting on the 24 cupcakes using a piping bag.
Serve, enjoy, and please don't start screeching with your mouth full.
«Sex and the City» is back
Magnolia Bakery ships to all states in the U.S., but not overseas. That means you must make the cupcakes yourself. Yes, must. Because it's time to get those dusty Manolo Blahniks out of your shoe cabinet again, invite your girlfriends over and screech materialistically together with Carrie, Miranda and Co.
Yup, «Sex and the City» is back.
Here are two men talking about the show.
Little is yet known about the series. But we do know that three of the four main actresses are reprising their roles. According to Good Morning America, the series will have to do without Kim Cattrall. Apparently, the actress, who plays Samantha in the series, has fallen out with Sarah Jessica Parker aka Carrie.
Ten episodes will be released on the streaming service HBOMax. The story follows up on the lives of the three women, who are now no longer in their shoppin’ 30s, but in their 50s.
We’ve all grown old.
Let's eat some cupcakes.
