When your shoes stink to high heaven!
We've all experienced smelly shoes at some point. Be it your own or your neighbour's. But why does it stink and how can you neutralise unpleasant odours? Find out more here.
When you wear new trainers or smart boots, you just feel good. Every now and then, that feeling is replaced by disgust and "Oh dear, that's no longer human" when you take your trainers off and a cloud of foot odour hits you.
We think that's a shame. That's why I've put together the best tips for you to keep your favourite shoes fresh and un-smelly for a long time to come.
How to keep your shoes smelling great!
Of course, you can now buy every fragrance spray in the universe and mist your feet with it. It works, but at some point the chemical mace against the odour will reach the end of its tether. Therefore: don't just blindly buy and spray around.
Take a break
Give your favourite kicks a break and alternate between shoes. Let sweaty shoes air out on the balcony. Preferably in the sun, heat doesn't give mould a chance. In winter, you can help with a hairdryer .
Sock selection
Socks made from natural materials such as cotton can help with sweaty feet. You should avoid synthetic materials.
Freezing
If your favourite trainers already smell unbearable, there is another way to minimise odours. Put your trainers in a plastic bag and place them in the freezer overnight. The cold will destroy most of the bacteria. Then leave the shoes to dry in the sun.
UV light
Shoe deodorant
What goes under your arms is also available for your shoes. The deodorant has an antibacterial formula that neutralises odours. It is quick to use and leaves behind a thoroughly improved fragrance.
Fresh Sole
Ultra-thin fresh soles prevent the smell of sweat and keep your shoes fresh for longer. As the sole is permeable to air, your feet won't sweat as quickly.
Baby powder
Baby powder is suitable for intense foot perspiration. The powder absorbs the moisture and you sweat less in your shoes.
More breathable shoes
Breathable shoes are particularly suitable for people who cover many kilometres on foot or by bike. This allows heat to dissipate better from the foot.
Why does it stink?
Now that we have successfully removed the stink from your shoes, let's do some research into the cause. Why do shoes actually stink?
Sweaty feet
Heat, exercise and stress cause feet to sweat. Some more, others less. Sweat is basically odourless, but cannot evaporate easily or at all due to socks and shoes. It is foot bacteria in combination with sweat that cause the unpleasant odours. So if the feet are less damp, there is also less odour.
