What helped me to fall asleep better

Night owl was my nickname even as a child. Because I really get going in the evening, I still need something to help me wind down.

When I was little, bedtime rituals were part of my life. I was either told a story by my parents or I fell asleep with an audio book. These routines changed over the years until I outgrew them at some point. There is no particular reason for this. Today, however, I realise that I lie in bed wide awake too often and want to reintegrate what was good for me back then into my everyday life. Because not every day is a weekend and my alarm clock gets me up early during the week. Since the beginning of winter, I have tried different methods such as yoga or drawing before going to bed. But in the end, three much simpler things helped me.

Analogue consumption

After 11pm, I try to avoid all screens around me. Because watching TV and scrolling through Instagram doesn't do me any favours before going to sleep. Despite the night setting, which provides warmer light, my mobile keeps me awake with its glaring screen. As I want to curb my consumption of social media apps anyway, I read instead. I also listen to podcasts like 99% Invisible or Design Matters until my eyes close. Compared to reading, listening works better for me because I don't need any light. My Bluetooth speaker, which I control with my smartphone for a change, provides a pleasant sound.

Warm drink

The sound of boiling water from my tea maker is now like an intro to bedtime. Sometimes I don't feel like having tea, but there's strength in regularity. The plus point of my favourite teapot from Menu and its teapot warmer is that I can keep my tea warm with it and reheat it the next day if I don't drink it all. I also like the fact that it has a suitable strainer for loose teas. Unlike a ready-made bag, this slows down the boiling process and supports my ceremony.

Pampering

Last but not least, the mundane task of moisturising my hands proves to be soothing. I apply an oil to my nails and cuticles and a cream to my entire hand. It probably works wonders because I'm focussing on something tactile and doing something good for my skin "on top". The active ingredients are absorbed undisturbed overnight and I wake up with soft skin.
