Scorcher ahead! Our tips on how to beat the heat

This weekend and the days after, summer’s set to bring us some sizzling hot days – and nights. With these tips from our editorial team, you’ll be ready to brave the sweltering weather.
No, you’re not about to read a weather report. I’m not going to explain how the upcoming hot days will roll in from Africa, taking temperatures to well above 30 degrees in large parts of Switzerland. Nor will I mention the heatwave’s tropical nights with 20-plus-degree temperatures.
What you’ll find here instead are some recommendations for articles from our magazine. These include product reviews penned by our editors as well as guides on how best to handle the heat. Admittedly, we’re not a patch on good old Mr. Kachelmann, Switzerland’s weather expert. In a recently published article (in German) for Spiegel Online he criticised the heat advice being given by authorities. Rather than completely sealing off your apartment and hanging damp towels up around your home, he strongly recommends letting fresh air in – even if it is warm.
The issue isn’t the temperature, it’s the humidity. That means keeping the blinds down with the windows open, and setting the fans to triple whammy so that sweat can evaporate.
In keeping with this advice, here’s a little advertising in the form of three nice fans from our shop. I bought Stadler Form’s Leo in 2022, and it’s cooling my feet as I write this. Meanwhile, the little Linuo fan has earned its stripes by performing well in my in-laws’ non-air-conditioned, vintage campervan. As for the Xiaomi model, it’d be my top pick of powerful pedestal fans.
Lukewarm, fan-produced air not cutting it for you?
Hot stuff: our air conditioner shopping guide
In his shopping guide, seasoned rooftop apartment dweller Simon Balissat breaks down the differences between devices promising cool relief – including air conditioners. You’ll find the relevant section of our shop here.
Simon found one air conditioner particularly impressive. You can read his product review of the Argo Ulisse here:
Last year, I went on the hunt for ways to cool off on a terrace, balcony or at a desk, trying out three products that do just that.
Sun cream jargon: what the heck is it all supposed to mean?
If you haven’t already, you should now check your sunscreen supplies and stock up if you need to. If you’ve lost your bearings amongst all the cryptic abbreviations on the tubes, I’d recommend Natalie’s article. It decodes SPF, UVB and all the rest.
Head for water!
If you’re lucky enough to live near a river or lake, jumping into the water will cool you down. As part of his Galaxus Wallflowers series, fellow editor Patrik Bardelli has taken a closer look at two products getting (too?) little attention from our customers. Will the heat be enough to bump these wallflowers into the spotlight?
A garden pool makes for an alternative to a lake or river – provided you have a garden to put it in. If you’ve now got the urge to build a little pool of your own, I’d recommend this article by Patrick Vogt.
Sweating in style: how your outfit and make-up can keep their cool
Fashion editor Stephanie has a few tips on suitably summery outfits for you. Here are just three of them, but you’ll find even more in her author profile.
Beauty expert Natalie shares hot tips on how to make your make-up last, even in sweltering heat. Her article includes helpful product recommendations.
