Interiors ideas to brighten your home

When I've had enough of certain decorative items like candle holders at home, I don't just replace them. I much prefer looking for styling tricks to put a new spin on them.

Some people enjoy spiced biscuits in the colder months; I like candles. Besides lamps, I have numerous candle holders, candle pots and lanterns. Because I have them on display all year, I need some change as the year draws to a close. I want them to take on a different feel in autumn. My search for new decor ideas using candles included browsing Pinterest and interiors magazines. This time, I found what I was looking for from the styling pros who make the House Doctor and Bloomingville catalogues. Scandinavian brands have a particularly creative and seasonal take on candle holders. And the best part is that you can put their tricks into practice with little effort.

More is more

Candle holders are very effective on their own, but they really shine when grouped together. For maximum effect, gather all of your candle holders in one place. Maybe on a side table that you can move slightly if needed. Alternatively, a tray works as a mobile base. Place it on your dining table or sideboard. A group of candle holderslooks even more effective when it's diverse. Combine shiny and matte surfaces. Whether they're ornate, minimal, wooden or metal – the main thing is that there's a real mix. It keeps things fresh.

It doesn't take much to bring the season into play. A bit of pine green, a bauble or two, a plate of biscuits – et voilà: the candle holder has a whole new look. Just make sure that nothing can catch fire when you're setting it all out.

Mix things up

All you need to do for this trick is raid your kitchen shelf: bowls, deep dishes and cups can give tall candle holders a new look. Put them in a container of your choice and fill the free space with moss or Christmas baubles.

Stack 'em up

You can also create variety by rearranging your candles. Stagger a row of them along the stairs or use boxes, side tables and stools as platforms. Another way to give your candles height is to hang them up. You'll need a suitable holder or a tray with handles that you can hang.

I still have some festive spice at home, though: scented candles that smell similar round off the makeover. The scent creates a different, comforting ambience.
