Real candles, reinterpreted
The four-year-old design by Lieke Van Dijk has a modern yet traditional look. It consists of a tubular holder made of metal and comes with three matching candles. The candle holder already comes with one of them, so I'm yet to explore the inner workings. Visually, it resembles a stick candle and it also has space for one with a diameter of 16 to 20 millimetres. There is a magnet on the underside of the holder. This allows it to be attached anywhere on the saucer.
In our range you can currently find the set consisting of three candles and a holder in grey, red or black. Other colours and sizes are also available. You can marvel at the other variants on Instagram. If you choose the saucer in size L, you can place several candle holders in size S or M on it.
Transport is made easier by a small handle on the plate. According to the designer, Lunedot was created with the idea that candles rarely stand well in a stand. They are often too big or small and tip over. This was too cumbersome for the Dutch designer. She solved the problem with the magnet, which holds the candle in place by attracting it. This works quite well: Lunedot does not tip over during transport and sudden movements. But with even more momentum, it also tips over.
Magic or clever design?
But that alone is not magic. The candle holder is designed in such a way that the candle shape loses none of its glowing charm when it burns out. To find out how this works, I light a candle.
From a distance, Lunedot looks like a normal, free-standing candle. The illusion works because I chose a grey candlestick. This makes the transition to the real white candle appear seamless.
I leave the candle burning until the flame goes out. After an hour, it's clear: something magical is happening here. During the entire burning time, Lunedot looks like it did at the beginning. Not a drop and the wick also appears unchanged. It is only in the last few minutes that the candle becomes visibly smaller and burns safely and cleanly inside the metal tube.
I don't know this from other candle holders. It is usually recommended to blow out the candle early. No wax residue should remain at the end. A look inside shows that there is actually only a coin-sized piece of wax left (Lunedot on the left in the picture, a conventional candle on the right).
The metal tube contains a spring. This transports the candle upwards piece by piece when it loses height. Now everything is clear and the magic is a little gone.
Conclusion
Van Dijk's design characterises the overall concept. The candle can burn safely in the stand. As there is no premature blowing out, there are no unusable candle residues. Thanks to magnetic attraction, the candle holders can be exchanged or combined with each other. If you choose the saucer in size L, you can place several candle holders in size S or M on it. For me, the real magic lies in this modular system. It makes it exciting. Designer pieces that you can reinterpret again and again are still enchanting years later.
