Turn your jeans from casual to dressy with these 7 tips
by Stephanie Vinzens
Good old leggings are (once again) back with a vengeance – and more elegant than ever before. This is how to get this trendy piece right.
We live in a time where loose trousers dominate the world of fashion. Skinny jeans have long since been pushed from their throne and left a power vacuum. One that can only be partially filled by wide-cut successors. This is where leggings come in as a body-hugging alternative. Yes, you heard right. Leggings. That same item of clothing that was considered a mortal sin of fashion after its heyday in the noughties. Later on, it became acceptable as athleisure wear. And now it’s clawed its way back onto the catwalk. Here are three tips to get that leggings look right:
What’s key if you want to wear legging off the yoga mat is that the material is thick and tight-fitting. Thin materials tend to be see-through, give off a low-quality look and also pose a risk of camel toe. However, this rule doesn’t apply if your outfit includes a top that covers your behind. All you daring fashionistas out there could even experiment with see-through nylon or lace.
You’ll generally come across as more fashion conscious if you’re not dressed in skin-tight clothing from head to toe. So make sure that at least one element of your look is cut a bit more generously. If you’re combining leggings with a tight-fitting tank top, a boxy bomber jacket or an oversized blazer will balance things out nicely. A blouse with wide sleeves or shoulders alone has what it takes to make your silhouette look more harmonious overall.
Certain elements that will make your leggings look more upmarket. Keep an eye out for models with stirrups or stitched creases. What’s more, leggings needn’t always be tight-fitting around the ankle. Models with a flare can look great. Particularly if they have a slit at the front or the side. They also happen to make your legs look longer.
To tone down your leggings’ gym vibe, you’ll need to include at least one elegant component. That’s easily done with shoes. Slingback pumps with a decent five-centimetre heel are a great combination with stirrup leggings. Loafers or ballerinas are a great, flat alternative. And knee-high boots with or without a heel will almost make your leggings like a regular pair of trousers. Add a blazer, coat or an elegant blouse and your leggings will be upgraded even more.
Accessories will add the final touches to any outfit. That’s especially important with leggings. Statement jewellery, such as bracelets, earrings or necklaces, will give your look a sprinkle of glamour. Similarly, belts, bags and sunglasses will take your leggings look to the next level.
