5 ways to spice up your tights

Stockings are rarely allowed in the spotlight. But if you give them a chance, they have so much to offer. Here’s how you can set the scene for them.

I’ve always viewed stockings as being mainly a means to an end. An inconspicuous layer of fabric that makes skirts and dresses wearable even in cooler temperatures – and should distract from the outfit as little as possible. But some runway and street style looks have opened my eyes to a world beyond ordinary black and beige tights. Here are five tips for more stocking diversity.

1. A little goes a long way

One simple insider tip is to wear translucent dark brown tights instead of black ones. They tend to add more harmony and warmth to your look. What’s more, because the colour’s lighter, you can choose a pair with a higher thread count (denier) for the same transparent effect – and they’ll be warmer and more robust. Neutral colours such as dark grey and navy are also great to subtly switch things up. They offer something new visually without overpowering your look.

2. An exciting classic

Fishnet and lace stockings have a trampy image – unjustly so. Smartly matched, they can look really elegant. For example, with business-casual clothing like loose blazers, blouses and knit dresses. These stockings look especially discreet in combination with long dresses and skirts, where they only peek out at the ankles.

3. A pretty pattern

If fishnet and lace stockings are too airy or sexy for you, you can also go for regular transparent models with a pattern instead. They have a similar effect, as they also add a new texture to your outfit. Examples of a long-running trend include dotted tights or those with a diamond pattern. Seamed stockings offer another simple yet effective alternative.

4. A splash of colour

Colourful tights dominate the look. If you don’t want them to appear out of place, you have to build the outfit around them. A fairly safe, yet very extravagant option is monochrome, for example in a trending, fierce red. But calmer tones like dark green or grey, or light colours like mint also look good from head to toe.

Of course, colourful tights can also work in multicoloured looks – there’s just always a wild element to them. It’s something you’ve got to be a fan of. Here are tips to tame them: the sheerer the colourful stockings are, the more likely they are to blend into the look. Shoes in the same colour as the tights also make the outfit look more coherent and lengthen your legs. As with fishnets, you can show off loud stockings with a subtle ankle flash.

5. A brilliant affair

To end, here’s a tip for special occasions: glittery or rhinestone stockings. To allow your leg jewellery to shine, I recommend wearing the tights with something simple, like a little black dress.
