Editor’s pick: 8 top pieces to get the look from Netflix’s «Russian Doll»
What’s in my shopping basket this week? Blazers, glasses and bling inspired by my current streaming favourite – with a personal summer twist
The unlimited streaming possibilities overwhelm me. That’s why I always end up watching series and films that I already know and like – or their long-awaited sequels. That’s what happened this week when the aforementioned streaming service kindly informed me by email (what a service) that the second season of «Russian Doll» was finally available. I binged season one in 2019, i.e. pre-pandemic. Both the story and vibe are dark. Swearing, smoking and thoroughly cynical main protagonist Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) is trying to work out why she keeps on dying in the same place at the same time – her birthday party – waking to either a new or old life. The dialogue is wonderfully clever, the humour is refreshingly sophisticated and the looks are a throwback to the era of Hedi Slimane at Yves Saint Laurent. In short, it’s everything I could wish for in an entertaining series.
Jennifer Rogien is the woman behind Nadia’s unmistakable style: «She’s got her guard up at all times. She’s a New Yorker. She has distilled her look to a uniform and it allows her to move through the city, her life and through events,» the costume designer explained to Awards Daily. More precisely, that means a lot of black, a touch of dramatic red here and there, sleek coats and blazers and a lot of gold jewellery. I love it. Despite the fact that summer’s just around the corner, I want the Russian Doll look.
I quickly found the perfect pair of sunglasses: Ray Ban’s The Marshal with a filigree gold frame. All I have to do now is combine the right jewellery – I pick out a long gold chain with a medallion pendant, just like Nadia. The name «Gold Digger» convinced me immediately. And because it is a well-known fact that two are better than one, I layer it with a second chain – this time a short one with a pearl detail. I don’t tend to take much persuading when it comes to blazers. I've had my eye on this Selected Femme one for a long time. And since the summer season is on the horizon, I decide on a tank top under a short-sleeved shirt. Not exactly armour to go, but it’s got a Hawaiian shirt vibe. Which is good too, right?
Another reason why I’m especially pleased about the second season of «Russian Doll» is that the concept and screenplay have been created exclusively by women: Natasha Lyonne, Amy Pohler and Leslye Headland.
Always in the mood for good hits, great trips and clinking drinks.
