Camping holidays from F to Z

From f for "almost everything" to z for "pretty much nothing", from large families to single festival-goers - camping holidays are a challenge. What to take, what to leave at home? Here you'll find almost everything from f to z.
You're planning your first camping holiday and suddenly it hits you like a bolt from the blue: Gopferdelli Bardelli, you're going to need a lot of equipment. Relax and let's take a look together at what you need in the basic equipment for your camping holiday.
Almost everything included - the family of five
Mummy, Daddy and the three children are spending their summer holidays at the campsite for the first time this year. The children (two girls, one boy) want to be outside as much as possible and camping is also much cheaper than an expensive holiday flat. But what do they need to take with them?
The "Touring Club Switzerland" TCS offers a good guide with its various checklists. You can find the links right here:
- Camping checklist for caravans or motorhomes (PDF, 0.2 MB)
- Camping checklist for the household (PDF, 0.3 MB)
- Camping checklist for clothing and hygiene (PDF, 0.2 MB)
Let's stay with our virtual family for now. Let's assume the two girls are eleven and seven years old, the son is four. Mummy and daddy are in their late 30s and early 40s respectively. What has to go, what stays at home?
Tents
Do you have nerves of steel? Then go on holiday with a tent for five people. Personally, however, I would prefer a variant with two tents. One for mum, dad and the little one, and one for the two girls. That way, there is a certain amount of privacy in case of minor or major disputes and the nights are also more relaxed. This has a positive effect on the mood.
Sleeping bags/trekking mats
It's summer, it's warm. A light sleeping bag should be enough. And a good trekking mat for the softest possible sleep. Well-rested children = fewer arguments = a good atmosphere (see tents).
Hammock
Must never be missing when camping, as it is a favourite with young and old alike. Nevertheless, it is often forgotten.
Folding tables and chairs
After an eventful day, the family gets together for dinner. Preparing the meal is also easier if there is a sturdy table available. Despite the table and chairs, a picnic blanket is of course a must.
Camping stove
You're not going to want to eat Cervelat every day for two weeks, are you? Camping cookers are available in all kinds of designs. From a better lighter to a proper cooker for when you're on the go.
Crockery and cutlery
The same applies here: from simple to fancy, anything goes. From plastic to silicone, from ceramic to aluminium, you'll find camping tableware for every need in the Galaxus range.
Cool boxes
Maybe you'd like to invest the money you're saving on your holiday home this year in the queen of cool boxes? The "CoolFreeze CFX 40W" from Dometic is available for just under 900 francs
.
Or you can make do with two "Icetime Plus" coolers from Campingaz for a total of 100 francs and invest the difference in Hugo and gin and tonic.
Drinking bottles
The "eddy Kids" drinking bottles from Camelbak are suitable for children aged between three and eight, which in our virtual family means for the little one and the younger daughter. For the rest of the Family members, I recommend an "Urban" from 24 Bottles. They look good and you have a pretty cool drink to hand for quite a long time.
Diverse light sources
I'm happy to come out as a candle fan here. Why not use simple and inexpensive tea lights for a cosy atmosphere and a torch for everything else?
For all those who prefer things a little brighter: the "Lighthouse Mini" camping lantern from Global Zero.
Clothesline
Washing day also exists during camping holidays. Sorry. With "The Clothline" from Sea to Summit, you can hang your freshly washed clothes in the sun to dry in no time at all. So there's still time for ... See cool boxes .
Camping showers
Just between you and me: I often find public toilets and showers quite disgusting. All that wet hair sticking around, wow! That's why a mobile camping shower is a must for me. And for the big and small business? Well, then I'll just go to a public toilet.
First aid kit
Two weeks camping with three children means that minor injuries are inevitable. As tick bites and their consequences are on the increase, a pair of tick tweezers should also be included in this kit.
And against those pesky mosquitoes that keep you awake at night.

Gesal PROTECT Fly and Mosquito Spray
400 ml
Game set
Of course, you could give each child their own iPad with a few dozen games and not see them for a fortnight. But honestly, that would be expensive, pedagogically not so great and anyway. When was the last time you played "Yahtzee" or "Eile mit Weile"? Exactly!
Accessories and accessories
And then there's a whole lot of "bits and bobs" that you need to take with you. For example:
Nerves of steel
Two weeks camping with three children is not only bound to cause minor injuries, it also requires nerves of steel. Meditation helps - how does it work?
What the family doesn't need
I keep meaning to do it and then never manage it: cut all digital wires. No mobile, no tablet, no computer, no internet, nothing digital . Instead: Book
Freshly in love, it doesn't take much - the couple
Freshly in love and planning your first holiday together? Of course, the 5-star luxury hotel with all the trimmings is very tempting. But believe me, a week in the same tent, in the same sleeping bag - you won't get that close to each other that quickly. After a week, you know where you stand and whether it will be a long-term thing. Anyone can go on a luxury holiday, but you have to be made for camping together.
Find a cosy spot by the water and pitch your tent. You can safely leave the following at home:
What the couple doesn't need
- Folding table (picnic blanket will suffice)
- Folding chairs (You'll spend most of your time in a horizontal position.)
- Game set (You play your own games.)
- Camping shower (Hello, the lake.)
- Washing line (Washing day? Still going!)
- Accessories and accessories (More on this in a moment...)
- Nerves of steel (You're freshly in love, you don't need nerves yet.)
Be sure to pack this ...
The "Sunlight" from Biolite creates the right atmosphere in the tent with its dimmable light in various colours.
... and that
Rather nothing to it - the festival visitor
Summertime = festival time. And Switzerland has a lot to offer when it comes to festivals. Big, small, loud, quiet - there's one for every taste. And you're right in the middle of it. Maybe you're 18, you've just graduated, maybe you've got a degree waiting for you and you want to let it rip this summer. You're travelling light and only need the following:
All you need is rock
A simple throw tent that can be set up and taken down in no time at all. Plus a lightweight sleeping bag, a sleeping mat, a small rucksack and a power bank to keep your smartphone charged. That's it.
