Beautiful, but impractical: 4 reasons not to get a trendy house bed

Which children’s room doesn’t have a house bed these days? Well, ours. We decided against the trendy sleeping space with a wooden roof – albeit somewhat reluctantly.

«Yay or nay to a house bed?» a friend recently asked me, whose daughter’s about to outgrow her cot. We recently posed ourselves the same question. At first, I was convinced we needed a house bed.

I had long had a crush on the Scandinavian-style sleeping solution. It’s designed to give children a cosy cottage feel and also happens to transform a boring nursery into a lovingly designed space. It seems, I’m not the only one who’s been wooed. House beds have been booming for years and are available in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours. They’re also the most popular product in the children’s bed range at Galaxus.

Beauty isn’t everything

Sure, they look amazing. And depending on the model, they’re even fitted with drawers and a built-in extra bed. Handy, right? Yes, at least at first glance. However, when we took a closer look at this furniture trend, we soon came across more cons than pros. And ended up deciding against getting a house bed. Why?

1. A house bed needs space – (too) much space

Beauty needs room to shine. In this case, we’re talking a wooden board construction that reaches all the way up to the ceiling. Once you’ve found a suitable place in the room, you’ll most likely have to leave it there for eternity. In fact, that’s pretty much guaranteed if you’re working with an attic room like we are. Spontaneous rearrangements are no longer possible with this unwieldy piece of furniture.

2. A house bed gives you headaches

I’m sure being a house bed owner would’ve won me a gold medal for the number of times I said «ouch». Giving good night kisses, waking up the kids, plumping up pillows, making the bed... just think of all those times I would’ve bumped my bonce against a wooden plank!

3. A house bed offers (too) many hanging options

A string of lights here, a dream catcher there. You can decorate your house bed with beautiful objects. But you’re likely to drape it in ugly ones, too. Dirty clothes, for example. I’m pretty sure our family would soon start using the bed as an unsightly clothes rack.

4. Short-lived house bed fad

Our two children’s preferences are fickle. They might wolf something down with great enthusiasm one day, but not touch it with a barge pole the next. The same goes for clothes. Or furniture for that matter. Our seven-year-old would probably deem that formerly beloved house bed as «so lame» within a very short period of time.

Rekindling the house bed dream

As you may have guessed, I advised my friend against getting a house bed. But in case that won’t stop her, I’ve suggested she could slightly modify its purpose. Namely as a nook to chill and read. In that case, a smaller house bed makes more sense, in my opinion. Provided there’s enough space for it, of course. And it’s not used for hanging stuff.

By the way, we opted for a white Flexa with fall-out protection. Boring and only in 43. place of Galaxus sales ranking among cribs. But it’s also practical and timeless.

Do you disagree? Would you highly recommend a house bed? Or do you share my opinion? Let me know in the comment section.
