A feast for the eyes this autumn

When the leaves die away in a resplendent swirl of reds, yellows and browns, I really come into my own. And when it comes to my make-up, it’s the same story. Here are 12 eye shadows and palettes sure to make even the most diehard summer-lovers warm up to autumn. At least, I hope so.
For me, the beginning of autumn also marks the dawn of eye shadow season. Don’t ask me why, but it’s the cooler seasons that inspire me to pay more attention to my eyes. The rest of the year, I use eye make-up pretty sparingly. Still mourning the summer? If so, here are some autumnal colours and palettes to cheer you up. Some of them have already found their way into my make-up bag, while others are high on my wish list.
Single shadows in powder or stick form
It doesn’t get any easier than this. Single eye shadows are the quick-fixes of the eye-shadow world. Shiseido’s Powdergel Eyeshadow in cool fuchsia is, yep, you guessed it, a mixture of powder and gel. Since they cling to the skin so well, hybrids like these provide your lids with vivid colour, without producing much fallout. Kiko Milano’s yellow-gold Water Eyeshadow can be applied in two ways: dry for a soft result, or wet for more expressiveness. I also think green shades with a twist are especially pretty at this time of year. Catrice’s khaki Golden Leaf eye shadow from the Art Colour range, for example, contains shimmering gold.

While you should apply single-shade shadows like the ones above with a brush, you can apply creamy sticks directly to your eyelid while it’s moving, then blend in the colour with your finger.

Palettes
Like to keep your options open? Well, you can do exactly that with these palettes. Rose Metals by Anastasia Beverly Hills contains a mix of buttery soft, muted matt and shimmer shades, topping my own greatest hits list of autumn eye shadows. The shadows are highly pigmented, so having practised hands and plenty of patience will stand you in good stead. Anastasia’s sub-brand Norvina is synonymous with eye-catching statement colours. Like to express yourself via your make-up? Then the Pro Vol. 3 is surely up to the task. If you fancy taking the safe option, you could go for the Ultimate Warm Neutrals palette by Nyx Cosmetics. Boasting a wide selection of warm shades, you won’t find strong or dark colours on this palette. The advantage of this? Your look will stay soft and won’t be OTT. On the other hand, you’ll be ever so slightly limited in your creativity.
Side note: You’ll find a selection of Anastasia Beverly Hills products at Beauty Lab by Galaxus & En Vogue on Kasernenstrasse 11 in Zurich – and you can even test out the Rose Metals palette in store.
Quads + duos
Quads are highly curated four-colour palettes that, ideally, give you ample opportunity to create different looks within a given colour scheme. All despite the limited choice of colours. They’re an ideal alternative if large pallets intimidate you with their almost infinite variety of combinations or if you simply want to save space. Duos take things one step further by limiting you to two colours. These varieties are especially handy when you’re rushing around in the morning, with no time to ponder your eye shadow colour.
Chanel’s mini palette is entirely matt, but don’t panic. Yes, the shades look intimidatingly dark, but they turn out soft when you apply them. Bobbi Brown’s creation from this year’s Lunar New Year collection, on the other hand, gives everything a subtle shimmer. Meanwhile, the Nars duo brings you the best of both worlds. While the base of both eye shadows is matt, it’s infused with golden sparkles. It’s an effect I’m especially fond of in eye make-up.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
