Piran Fire steel

The traditional fire iron, also known as a fire hammer, is forged from a single piece of high-carbon steel and then hardened to the appropriate hardness.

To ignite a fire, you strike the fire hammer against a sharp edge of a flint stone. A piece of charred cotton fabric is placed on the flint stone as tinder. When struck, sparks are generated. These are tiny steel particles that become glowing hot upon impact. The spark falls onto the charred cotton fabric, which begins to glow due to the heat.

But that's only half the battle! The glowing piece of cotton fabric is placed into suitable dry materials, such as jute or hemp twine, dry grass, or plant down. Now, the ember must be skillfully blown on to create a flame. The entire procedure sounds more complicated and difficult than it actually is. With a little practice, it takes about one to two minutes to start a fire.
