Yet another reason to hide under the duvet

The bed takes up a lot of space in the bedroom. So it's all the more important to get the layout right.

The bed linen is the new luxury product. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, bedding has been staged like a designer handbag. Bloggers such as Linn Eklund, Matilda Djerf or Emmi Aihos no longer take photos of impersonal hotel room beds, they showcase their own. They sometimes even photograph them in the open air. Whether the sheets are checked, striped or floral, the combinations are colourful and creative to the point of making the bed the centrepiece of the bedroom. The whimsical style encourages imitation. What's also pleasing is that the bed linen is sometimes crumpled, unlike the impeccably ironed hotel sheets. This makes the nonchalant style easier to imitate.

A change of perspective

Most of the time, I lay the cushions flat on the bed. For variety, I sometimes put them upright. This works well if there's a headboard or a wall. You can also place one or more pillows flat on the sheet and place another in front of it.

Stacking

Pillows don't have to be side by side. Stacked together, they give the impression of being tidy and symmetrical. Make sure you put the larger pillows underneath and the smaller ones at the very top.

We mix it up

Inadvertently, I washed one of the light grey pillowcases with the dark linen. Once dry, it turned dark grey. When I was making the bed, I realised that the two shades of grey went well together. Blogger Matilda Djerf proves just how aesthetically pleasing mixing different colours and structures can be.

We add a layer

The "onion" look isn't just found in fashion. For bed linen, it allows you to adapt to different temperatures. What's more, other colours and prints can be incorporated in this way. For the layered look, place an extra sheet without elastic under the duvet and let it show slightly.

We cover

Whether quilted, knitted, cotton or cashmere, bed covers complete the layered look and style. Place them over the entire surface of the bed so that the duvet is still visible underneath. Or simply fold it up and drape it over just one part of the bed. If this look is too much for you, pull the bedspread over the pillows. The look will be more classic. Unfolding the bedspread completely looks particularly good if it's decorated with embroidery or artwork.

Decorating

Instagrammer Mimizow shows how to make certain things stand out. She chooses a plush pillow to transform her bed into something new. Whatever you choose, the decorative pillow should be visually different from the others. Also, vary the fabrics: combine non-slip fabrics such as wool, velvet, cotton or fur, or prefer lightweight materials such as silk or linen. Placed in the middle or somewhere on top of the duvet, the decorative cushion adds a casual touch.

Playing with sizes

Various shapes provide life and depth to the whole. A square pillow (50 x 50cm) works well with a smaller one (10 cm smaller) or a pillow rond. All that matters is that you like it.

It doesn't matter what you choose, a well-made bed is all the more reason to escape, especially during the cold season.
