Chocolate Butta
Skin tints can be tricky. Though fabulous on paper, most of the ones I’ve tried so far have been disappointing. My new favourite, however, is a different story. And if that weren’t enough, it offers UV protection too.
There’s one crucial thing a skin tint needs to have going for it. It’s got to be hassle-free. As foundation’s lighter, more natural-looking sibling, it’s a combination of skincare product and make-up. It’s for days when all you’ve got time for between your morning coffee and brushing your teeth is one feel-good tune instead of your entire happy playlist. Skin tints contain a small amount of pigment, so they can be applied to your face more quickly. They’re also full of ingredients with moisturising properties, which have a nourishing effect on the skin. Or so the (romanticised) theory goes.
While plenty of products deliver on their promise of a more natural finish, the variety of shades and undertones leaves a lot to be desired. When I go to the drugstore, I’m always shocked to see that there are only two shades to choose from: orange and even more orange. Obviously, none of those look good. It’s usually pricier brands that offer a wider selection. That’s why I’m all the more excited about the new Buttermelt Glaze Soft Glow Skin Tints from drugstore brand Nyx. Not only do the tints come in ten shades, but they also offer protection against UV radiation.

Colour
Ten shades isn’t many for a foundation. What a skin tint can do, however, is cover a range of skin tones and undertones. Since it provides light coverage, one shade can be used for several skin tones. That means the formula’s more adaptable than regular make-up. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the 02 Vanilla Bean Butta matched my skin tone. Foundations and tints tend to be a little too warm for me. This one, on the other hand, is beautifully neutral – so I really hit the jackpot with it. Plus, the UV filter doesn’t create any white residue.
Coverage
The coverage is super light. If you’re dabbing on the tint with a buffer brush, you’ll be able to keep building it up to a certain point. Just want to even out your complexion? Don’t have any spots or major imperfections to conceal? Then the Buttermelt Glaze will be ideal for you.
The skincare aspect
The moisturising, liquid formula contains mango and shea butter, niacinamide (which strengthens the skin barrier) and SPF 30 (the filters protect against both UVA and UVB radiation). Nyx says the tint’s suitable for normal to dry skin – and that tallies up with my experience as someone with combination skin. I notice a stronger shine on my oily skin areas over time, but I like that. For some people, though, that might be too much of a good thing. When it comes to scent, the tint is pretty low-key. It smells of a subtle mix of tropical cocktail and sun cream.
Finish
I look at myself in a hand mirror every couple of minutes to see how the tint’s wearing and whether it’s lost any of its magic. But no. My skin looks plump, glowy, fresh and suspiciously like... skin. Nyx compares the finish to a glazed donut, but I wouldn’t go that far. The tint apparently lasts up to 12 hours, but I never left it on my skin as long as that. You can count on it lasting seven or eight hours though. Mind you, it won’t last as long if you’re exercising. One thing you should be careful about is the fact that the formula isn’t transfer-proof. In other words, if you rub it against your shirt or blow your nose, it’ll come off.
Packaging
The skin tint also scores points for its packaging. Firstly, because of the feel-good yellow, and secondly, because the tube’s been designed with a narrow tip so you can squeeze out the right amount of formula.
Remember: Make-up that contains UV protection isn’t a substitute for your daily sunscreen. It’s just an extra. To be sufficiently protected, you’d have to put on so much tint that the result would be anything but pretty. In fact, you’d probably hit the «glazed donut» mark after all.
Pro
As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
