Pops more than any cocktail: mindful drinking. A trend that renounces alcohol and increasingly intoxicates people. You can still celebrate Mojito Day - perhaps with an alcohol-free alternative from our shop.

Dear cocktail fans, 11 July is a drink-worthy occasion: after all, it is Mojito Day in the US annual calendar of curious holidays. So raise your glasses with me - at least if you have a non-alcoholic version in your hands. Which is not at all unlikely. After all, movements such as No and Low Alcohol, Sober Curiosity and Mindful Drinking are becoming increasingly popular and are enjoying a growing, (largely) sober following.

All of these movements are in favour of consciously giving up or reducing alcohol and draw attention to the negative consequences of high-proof drinks. The statistics are quite sobering. The Federal Institute of Public Health reports: "7.9 million people in the 18 to 64-year-old population in Germany consume alcohol in a way that is risky to their health."

In addition, there is talk of around 74,000 deaths a year caused by or in connection with alcohol.

Consumption of alcoholic beverages per capita is falling

Despite these alarming figures, we have been experiencing a turnaround in general drinking behaviour for a few years now. According to DHS (German Centre for Addiction Issues), German alcohol consumption fell continuously between 1990 and 2020. What is particularly striking is that consumption is declining among young people in particular, as a study by the BZgA (Federal Centre for Health Education) shows. According to the study, regular alcohol consumption (about once a week) has decreased significantly since the 1970s. Among 18 to 25-year-olds, it has fallen by more than half from 67.1 per cent to 32 per cent in 2021, while among 12 to 17-year-olds it has fallen by a third in the same period: from 25.4 per cent to 8.7 per cent.

Plan B: these are the alternatives

Especially in Gen Z, i.e. those born between 1995 and 2010, giving up alcohol has become a trend and is part of a trendy, health-conscious lifestyle for many. And as this trend grows, so does the range of alcohol-free alternatives on offer. You'll also find what you're looking for in our shop.

Instead of a classic mojito, you can prepare a so-called virgin mojito, which contains ginger ale instead of rum:

There are also some rum alternatives, such as the one from Rebels: as one user writes, not only "super tasty", but also "surprising how the rum notes come through".

If you want to stock up your bar with non-alcoholic gin, you could try Wonderleaf. According to one review, it smells "very similar to normal gin".

And of course there is also alcohol-free wine or sparkling wine, as well as alcohol-free beer in the shop.

This allows you to celebrate properly and completely without revolutions. But the same applies here: (no/low) alcohol in moderation! Because - be careful - the nice alternative products can also contain a lot of sugar or other harmful substances, as can be read in the National Library of Medicine. Of course, that doesn't mean you can't indulge. Cheers!
