Undyed clothing is a sustainable trend

Fashion labels are increasingly focusing on «undyed» fashion. Read on to find out what it's all about and why it should turn into a long-term trend.

Fashion trends don't necessarily have to fuel fast fashion. The best proof of this? Natural coloured jeans, which are super trendy right now and a must in everyone’s wardrobe. If you go for an undyed model, that’s one made of natural fibres, you're doing everything right. Why? The process of dyeing textiles pollutes the environment immensely. The denim industry in particular fell into disrepute some time ago for its bleaching, dyeing and finishing processes, as the chemicals required for this are harmful to the environment and the employees in the factories. Because undyed textiles don’t include any of these processes, it’s desirable that this etsablishes itself as a long-term trend. So is it just a matter of time before we’ll all be wearing undyed fashion from head to toe?

Probably. In addition to the fashion label Closed, which has offered some undyed items in its collections for some time, the fair fashion brand Armedangels was one of the first to launch a full «undyed» line. The vegan range is based on undyed items such as denim pants, jackets as well as shirts and, according to the German brand, is said to save almost 90 percent of CO₂ emissions compared to conventional dyeing processes thanks to the elimination of dyeing. The minimalist garments don’t only put you in a summer mood – light colours are a summer must – but are also timeless basics. Featuring a simple cut and natural colours, they never go out of fashion. The only drawback is you need to be even more careful not to stain them. Undyed or light-coloured clothes are so delicate that you have to wash them frequently, which is bad for the environment.

By the way, the outdoor brand Jack Wolfskin produces accessories made of undyed natural fibres. The «Ecostride» shoe model, for example, is made of undyed hemp fibres. So will there soon be undyed fashion for any occasion? Hopefully so!

When I’m not exploring the depths of the sea as an open water diver, I enjoy plunging into the world of fashion. On the streets of Paris, Milan and New York is where I keep my eyes peeled for the latest trends. And I’ll show you how to take them from the catwalk to your everyday life.
