Travelling with the Xiaomi 90 Fun carry-on – my verdict

The Xiaomi 90 Fun carry-on’s one of our bestsellers. After a trip to London together, I give it a 7/10. Here’s why.
A weekend trip with hand luggage is the perfect chance to test out a suitcase. Because of its visual appeal, consistently positive reviews, and the fact that it’s one of our ten bestselling suitcases, I’m taking the Xiaomi 90 Fun with me to London.
The aluminium case scores its first point before I’ve even properly used it. Clever packaging makes getting it home from the shop incredibly easy – the large cardboard box has a sturdy plastic handle.
Once I’m at home, I finally unpack – and repack. The 90 Fun needs to be freed from two polystyrene shock absorbers and a fabric bag. Its wide, ribbed, hard aluminium shell doesn’t disappoint in real-world use. The suitcase feels high-quality and sturdy – although it already weighs over four kilos with nothing in it. It’s a bit of a shame that the TSA locks and wheel joints are only made of plastic. Well, nobody’s perfect. On the plus side, it glides quietly and smoothly on its four wheels in every conceivable direction. Its extendable handle retracts effortlessly at the touch of a button and can be locked in four different positions.
Inside
With the two clasps released, the Xiaomi trolley opens, revealing… not much inside. Both halves of the suitcase are equipped with a Y-shaped Velcro strap to secure their contents. There’s also a loose, unpadded divider with a zipped pocket for small items such as keys or a charging cable. That’s it. But maybe a cabin-size suitcase doesn’t need anything else? It’s probably a matter of opinion.
With dimensions of 50.5 × 38.3 × 20.3 centimetres (external dimensions including wheels: 55.1 × 38.3 × 20.3 cm), I can easily pack everything I need for my four-day trip. I put the divider back on top of the packed items (maybe for anti-crease protection?), but I don’t really see any practical use for it. I would’ve almost preferred a small side pocket for storing bits and pieces.
To make my case as distinctive as possible – I’ve learned from my last test – I attach a highly visible luggage tag to the Xiaomi (according to Google Holiday 100, it’s very trendy anyway), then we’re ready to roll.
The aftermath
The 90 Fun case had to travel from my home to the airport on Thursday via the S-Bahn, in the overhead compartment and then on the London Underground to the hotel. And on Sunday, it had to make the same journey back. The trip left its mark. On closer inspection, the suitcase has acquired a few dents and scratches here and there – that’s just how it is with aluminium. These little «souvenirs» don’t really bother me. In fact, I like that my case no longer looks brand new. However, if you’re planning to invest 200 francs in it, you should be aware of the material’s susceptibility to wear and tear.
In a nutshell
Beautiful and practical with minor flaws
Fans of clean aluminium design will love the Xiaomi 90 Fun carry-on’s – and it costs a fraction of the comparable Rimowa model. It holds 31 litres – easily meeting the carry-on size requirements of most airlines – and offers plenty of storage space with its no-frills interior. Its four 360-degree swivel wheels roll smoothly – and quietly – in all directions. Plus, three handles make it easy to carry. However, the outer clasps look a bit cheap compared to the overall design, it’s relatively heavy and it’s susceptible to scratches and dents.
