This much-loved sunscreen is great for everyone in the family

Insider tips should be kept as secret as possible – but sharing is caring, right? My family and I made such a great sunscreen discovery that I can’t help but share my joy with you. Thank me later.

I’m a stickler for sun protection. If you’ve read any of my previous articles, you’ll know I’m the kind of mum who insists on covering her kids from head to toe in sunscreen right after sunrise on hot summer days. Not because I enjoy it, but because UV protection is an absolute necessity, in my opinion.

With this in mind, it’s no surprise that when a friend of mine raved about a sunscreen for adults and children a few months ago, I was all ears. Her dermatologist had recommended it to her. I just had to give it a go!

I did – and instantly knew I was never going to let it go again. Why? Read on to find out – even if sharing my insider tip means it might be sold out for the rest of the summer.

Sensolar Sun protection

Great for skin and hair

Sensolar is a brand that belongs to the Swiss company Lifeforce GmbH based in Küssnacht, Schwyz. It’s actually more of a lotion than a cream. At first glance, it looks strange, as the liquid visibly separates into two colours. It’s yellow at the bottom and orange at the top. Be sure to shake the bottle well before spraying it on, allowing the two colours to mix.

The first time I applied it, I was very sceptical. Sensolar isn’t greasy and doesn’t smell. You barely notice it on your skin. After having used it several times – including under quite extreme conditions – I’ve lost every bit of doubt. This sunscreen offers effective protection against UVA and UVB rays and is waterproof as well as sweatproof. My husband applies it before playing tennis in the sun; I use it for jogging, swimming and outdoor fitness. And because it’s not oily at all, you can spray it right onto your scalp without your hair getting greasy.

Easy to apply

We also love Sensolar because it’s handy for our children. There’s no bigger struggle than having to apply sunscreen early in the morning while they’re half asleep before taking them to day care. With Sensolar, we’re much faster, as its light consistency and spray function mean we have the kids sprayed all over in no time.

Of course, you have to rub the product into the skin after spraying it on. Tests show that spraying alone doesn’t get the sunscreen all over the skin. Nevertheless, the whole process is still a lot faster with Sensolar than it used to be with conventional sunscreens.

Sensolar is free of alcohol, emulsifiers and fragrances, making it suitable for children’s skin. The manufacturer recommends it for children over the age of two. It contains no nanoparticles, paraffins or parabens either – an advantage for the environment. There’s a «Hawaii accepted – coral safe – no microplastic» stamp on the bottle. According to the manufacturer, the product is free of UV filters such as oxybenzone and octinoxate.

Unfortunately, quality has its price

So what’s the catch? As is so often the case: the price tag. On Galaxus, you pay a hefty 23.50 francs for 100 millilitres – or 36.20 francs for double the amount (as of 7 July 2023). That’s a lot of money for something you’ll need a lot of in the summer.

That’s why we’ve introduced a rationing system at home. If we’re in a hurry, we use Sensolar aka the liquid gold. The same applies for sports activities in the blazing sun. On all other occasions, we resort to conventional, cheaper sunscreen.

Its price tag is also the biggest point of criticism according to our user reviews. Apart from that, our Community members agree with me and praise Sensolar to the skies.
