Swimwear Guide: which fabric suits you?
by Vanessa Kim
Having a crisis at the mere thought of buying a new swimsuit? Avoid these four shopping traps, and it should be smooth sailing.
Don’t get me wrong, you should like the look of your swimsuit. But if you happen to have a penchant for dynamic water sports and itsy-bitsy triangle bikinis, combining these two passions could be your undoing when out SUPing or bodyboarding.
The same goes for hold: whether you’re swimming or sunbathing, you don’t want your suit to pinch you or slide around and unintentionally expose you. Before you buy, think carefully about what your swimsuit has to be capable of withstanding – and be honest with yourself. Don’t compromise, even if it means not going for the visually most tempting model.
Online shoppers in particular will find themselves facing this trap; if you’re solely relying on pictures to make your purchase decision and can’t feel and try on the swimsuit, you should take the time to do some research. Look at the ratings, read the reviews and check out social media. On Instagram, for example, you’ll often find tagged images with more realistic snaps of customers in the swimsuit than you’ll find on the brand’s website.
When shopping in-store, keep in mind that just because something looks nice on the hanger or mannequin doesn’t mean it’ll fit your body well. Take the time to try on the swimsuit and move around in it.
Do you find yourself automatically reaching for both parts of a bikini in the same size? In most cases, this won’t work out. There’s a reason why bikini tops and bottoms are sold separately. Put together your perfectly fitting bikini diligently – and keep in mind that the material can stretch a bit when wet. If you’re between two sizes, choose the smaller one (as long as it doesn’t cut into you, of course).
In addition, it’s always good to choose a model with an adjustable closure and adjustable straps. Over time, even the best quality swimsuit will wear out a bit. If you have the option to tighten in, you'll be able to enjoy your favourite piece for longer.
Look out for the seams, opacity, lining and shape. In fact, put your potential new swimsuit through a little endurance test: stretch the fabric out a bit and check that it doesn’t become see-through and quickly snaps back to its original shape.
Double layers or a lining in places that should remain fully opaque is a must and a sign of good quality.
