Salon products belong in the salon, not in your bathroom

I wish I had a portable "get me out of here" button that I could press at any time. For example, when the sales talk starts at the hairdresser.

"Can I show you our new skincare line?" the hairdresser asks me, giving me a hopeful smile. With my wet hair, the dreary cape over my shoulders and the sharp scissors in her hands, I don't exactly feel in an exalted position to give her my honest opinion. I do it anyway. Looking back, this was probably the moment when I learnt to say a polite "no" to complete strangers. Just as I am about to breathe a sigh of relief, the store manager joins us and asks my hairdresser in a stern tone whether she has already introduced me to the exclusive salon products. She answers truthfully in the negative and (still in my presence) receives a scolding. After the store monster has left, the intimidated girl whispers to me: "You know, we're obliged to show the products to our customers. Whether they like it or not." Wow.

The first sign that the sales show is about to start are little negative comments about your hair. You know, sayings like: "But your ends are dry!", "Is your roots always so greasy?" or "Do you actually do anything about your dandruff?" This is followed by a casual detective question: "What do you normally use to care for your hair?" I guarantee that your answer, unless it includes the products that adorn the salon shelves, will elicit a sniffle. And before you know it, an "Oh, am I doing something wrong?" will escape you.

Over the years, I have allowed myself to be pressurised into buying a number of overpriced "wonder weapons". I bought them, used them up and then cried after my money because - let's be honest - the result still never looked like it came from the salon. I now cut most of my hair myself. Nevertheless, I have to admit that my previous visits to the hairdresser have taught me an important life lesson: To say no. Because even the shampoo that costs 40 francs doesn't apply itself and at the end of the day, only one thing can give you that "fresh from the salon" feeling: a visit to the salon.

Have you also been a victim of this sales strategy?

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
