Pia’s Picks: antique inspiration for modern living spaces

From the Acropolis to the living room: Greek column-inspired furniture combines classic and modern design elements, making it one of my current favourites.

I hated geometry at school, but now I’ve come to like cylindrical furniture, lamps and home accessories. They’re statement pieces and remind me of iconic Greek columns. In addition to their geometric shape, these columns often have a grooved structure and decorative volutes at the top, which are shaped like scrolls or spirals. They look elegant and light, despite their stability. And it’s precisely these elements that give a room a sophisticated flair.

The reference to classical Greek architecture lends furniture a timeless beauty that never goes out of fashion. It also ensures that the designs match different interior styles, be it classic, modern or eclectic.

The fact that the beautiful pillars stand for durability is usually also reflected in the quality. Pieces of furniture that stand on large columns are generally stable and durable. Their vertical alignment can also visually elongate rooms, which is a particular plus in rooms with low ceilings.

But the best thing is that the stylish columns remind me of Greece, my favourite vacation destination. They’re a tribute to this beautiful country. That way, I’m hoping to hang on to that holiday feeling for a little longer.

In my Pia’s Picks series, I regularly showcase my favourite finds – things I might not need, but definitely want.
