My flat needs help!

You think a lot about your interior, but you just can't get it to feel right? Then you've come to the right place. Mona and Michael are here to help - today they're giving Franziska some tips for her home.
I was recently able to add a beautifully converted, newly renovated floor to my flat and furnish it to my heart's content. Although I have tried to design the large living room with great attention to detail, I still have the feeling that it is rather empty and cold. Something is missing, but I just don't know what. I hope you can help me with my luxury problem.
Franziska
Dear Franziska,
You have turned to us for help and we would like to help you make your living room warm and cosy.
When we looked at the photos, we had the impression that the room was in a basement. The visible brickwork by the staircase and the low ceiling height are evidence of this. These factors favour the feeling of cold and the room presses from above. The light-coloured wooden floor only contributes moderately to a warm ambience. We have a few tips for you on how to get the best out of your living room.
Colour
The wall with the exposed brickwork by the stairs is a great place to add some colour to the room. A dark and matt colour gives the brickwork more depth and also brings some warmth into the room. Suitable colours would be a warm shade of grey or a deep umber brown.
Light
The light in the room currently comes from a surface-mounted ceiling light. Due to the low room height, we think it would be good if the light in the room did not come from the ceiling. Much better would be floor lamps, preferably with indirect upward light. Floor lamps look very cosy and provide a pleasant light. If light from the free-standing luminaires also shines on the ceiling, this is brightened up and the oppressive feeling from above is alleviated.
Textiles
Textiles are an important tool for creating warmth and cosiness. Curtains, blankets, cushions, carpets... all these fabrics are soft and pleasant to the touch. Textiles also have a positive influence on room acoustics as they absorb sound.
A carpet in the area of the sofa and side table would do the room a world of good. It can be a high-pile carpet. It should be restrained in terms of colour, a shade of grey would be ideal. However, it should not be too light in colour.
The white, thin curtains with the floral patterns make little statement against the white walls. Here too, we would recommend thicker, heavier textiles in colours that match the carpet. The curtains look best when they frame the window on the right and left, giving the room more structure.
Furniture
The chest under the stairs is a beautiful piece of jewellery, but it looks a little lost. In terms of colour, it barely stands out from the floor and unfortunately doesn't really come into its own. How about a reading corner? Open the chest and fill it with books. Add comfortable seating and a recognisable floor lamp to the chest and place everything on a small rug or cowhide. A really nice reading corner is ready.
The plant next to the TV unit could be bigger. A large pot in a warm shade of grey with a beautiful large plant adds a touch of nature to the room. It will stand out better on the other side of the TV unit and shield the TV area from the passageway. On the opposite wall, you can place a second plant in front of the wall, which also contributes to the room structure.
We imagine a round shape as a side table for the sofa. This loosens everything up a little. Ideally in the same colour as the sofa.
In terms of style, we recommend not mixing too many styles together. For example, hang a photograph in one corner of your living room and a monochrome nude painting by the doorway. Perhaps you can find another place for the nude painting and give the photograph a little more expression with a high-quality wooden frame.
The textiles are also a bit of a mixed bag. The curtains have a floral pattern, there's a cushion with geometric shapes on the sofa and a blanket with stars. If you want a blanket for the sofa, we recommend a lighter, plain-coloured blanket; for example, a cosy knitted blanket in a colour that matches the sofa or rug. You can reduce the number of cushions. It's best to have just 2 - 3 high-quality individual pieces in a simple "Black & White" colour.
A clear line, or the decision in favour of one direction, gives a room a stronger identity and supports its overall effect.

We have sketched out our ideas in the floor plan. We hope that you like our suggestions and that you can implement some of them. We would be delighted to receive photos of your living room makeover

Whatever I do, I always do it with a lot of heart and passion. Passion accompanies me like a red thread through life. This is how I love to spend time with my family as well as to design rooms and objects. I like real materials where you can see, smell and feel how they have been worked by hand into an object. They tell stories and are the beautiful companions for life. I like to be inspired by nature, the things of everyday life and my children. I am also inspired by the sensual experiences in traditional handicraft businesses. Based on common values and virtues, I founded the interior design company "MOOMII" in 2016 with my colleague Mona Dolpp.
