More storage space in the kitchen in no time at all

Rags, spices, cooking utensils - everything flies around in the kitchen or is jumbled up somewhere in the corner. With crockery baskets and a towel rail, I can create more space in a matter of minutes.

My kitchen is big. Perfect for lively conversations at parties and watching people cook. But there's a problem with the open storage space. The sink is tiny and was pushed into the corner by the builder. There's hardly any space around it and even less room for my elbows when washing up. My spice cupboard is also overflowing.

This is not visually appealing, nor is it practical. Storing rags, washing-up liquid and spices in cupboards is out of the question for me, I need them to hand. That's why I'm now simply converting a towel holder for the bathroom and cutlery baskets into a floating storage solution.

Measure, glue and you're done

If your kitchen is tiled, it's best to get a self-adhesive towel rail, which saves you the hassle of drilling into the tiles. I opt for a spot on the wall above my worktop. To make sure the bar hangs straight, I use the joints as a guide, but I also use a spirit level to help me. Everything in my flat is crooked, so I no longer trust my eye measurements or guide lines. Once I have marked the height with a pencil, I remove the protective film on the back of the holder and press it against the wall. Be careful: The adhesive holds incredibly well, which is why subsequent adjustment is rather difficult. Nevertheless, anyone with two left hands should be able to do it.

Once the thing is hanging, the cutlery or other baskets with hooks are attached. I fill them with all sorts of stuff that would otherwise get in the way. You can also get additional S hooks to which you can attach anything with a hole. The rod itself holds cleaning sprays and rags. It's so easy for me to store things openly and always have them within reach when I'm working in the kitchen.

My bits and bobs now finally have a place where they won't get in my way.
