Five alcohol-free alternatives for your dry January

It's a classic New Year's resolution: staying sober in January. After a boozy December that culminates on New Year's Eve, going teetotal sounds like a nice break. To make sure you stay committed throughout «dry January», I’ve put together five tasty alcohol-free alternatives.

A few years ago, non-alcoholic drinks were called «virgin cocktails», consisted mostly of fruit juices and syrup and were absolutely unbearable. Today’s «mocktails» are less sweet and an actual alternative to alcohol. Most bars now offer pretty decent alcohol-free beer and not just those from large commercial breweries. Even wine without alcohol is now available in a relatively good quality. In other words, there has never been a better time to start the New Year sober.

Non-alcoholic beer – «Nanny State»

Many moons ago, a former alcoholic told me «Jever Fun» was the best alcohol-free beer available. It’s pleasantly bitter and not too sweet. I enjoyed «Nanny State» from the Scottish brewery BrewDog for the same reasons. The IPA came second in my non-alcoholic beer test.

Non-alcoholic sparkling wine

I'm not talking about kiddie champagne Rimuss, because that’s way too sweet for my liking. Thankfully, there are excellent alcohol-free proseccos and sparkling wines out there today, so we no longer have to put up with face-contorting fizz.

Seedlip

«Seedlip» produces non-alcoholic liquor. Think gin but without the alcohol and extra sugar. Check out the following alternatives to classic cocktails («NOgroni» anyone?) on their website. Indeed, these bottles aren’t cheap but they do last.

Non-alcoholic wine

We’re not talking common grape juice but wines that have been stripped of alcohol. It would be great if Swiss winemakers would get on board. But until then, we’ll have to make do with Spanish wines by Miguel Torres.

Sangre de Toro Tinto 0.0° non-alcoholic (6 x 75 cl, 2018)
Red wine

Sangre de Toro Tinto 0.0° non-alcoholic

Sangre de Toro Blanco 0 0° non-alcoholic (6 x 75 cl, 2018)
White wine

Sangre de Toro Blanco 0 0° non-alcoholic

Water

Simple tap water is a fantastic drink. Chilled. With bubbles. No matter how it’s served, I just love it. There’s a whole Subreddit thread full of memes dedicated to the love of water. And rightly so. Stay hydrated!

Doing a dry January? If so, what are your go-to beverages? I look forward to your tips in the comments field below.

When I flew the family nest over 15 years ago, I suddenly had to cook for myself. But it wasn’t long until this necessity became a virtue. Today, rattling those pots and pans is a fundamental part of my life. I’m a true foodie and devour everything from junk food to star-awarded cuisine. Literally. I eat way too fast.
