Binge drinking is so yesterday: this bittersweet mocktail is a must at every Christmas party

Want to minimise embarrassing Christmas moments this year? Put down the booze– and try this delicious mocktail instead.

Know the feeling? Christmas is coming, and this time you’re determined to stick to your resolutions: no antics. No angry discussions about the Roman Empire. And certainly no awkward silences after you’ve looked into your cousin’s eyes for a bit too long. None of that. Zilch. This Christmas party will be perfect.

Aaaand then you spend 26 December with a hangover anyway. You threw half of your resolutions overboard after the first glass of champagne – the other half fell victim to what you poured yourself afterwards. If only you’d stayed sober!

For a better time this year, here’s a simple mocktail recipe as part of my «Binge drinking is so yesterday» series. I call it «Cause it’s a bitter Sweet Symphony, that’s life». I like to serve it at aperitifs since it’s light and sparkling. The tonic water adds extra acidity to the citrusy taste of the Sanbitter and creates a wonderful grapefruit note when put together. Bitter additions come into their own particularly well in this drink – an intense and surprising taste.

Here’s how it’s done.

Sparkling and shimmering: here’s what you need for one drink

  • 50 ml Sanbitter
  • 50 ml tonic water
  • 50 ml sparkling mineral water
  • Some lemon juice

optional:

It’s simple to put together. Fill one third of the glass with ice, pour in the Sanbitter, tonic water, mineral water and a splash of lemon juice. For extra lavish Christmas magic, you can add a pinch of edible drinkable glitter.

If you like things sweeter, add a dash of orange juice to the mocktail. It’ll give the drink a fruity note – perfect for an aperitif before a heavy Christmas roast or heated family drama. Good luck!

Painting the walls just before handing over the flat? Making your own kimchi? Soldering a broken raclette oven? There's nothing you can't do yourself. Well, perhaps sometimes, but I'll definitely give it a try.
