Boho-chic, a style of fashion that’s almost been forgotten, is currently making a comeback. And with it, a particularly beautiful style element – flounces. These seven flounce fashion pieces are totally in right now.

If you’ve been shopping in the last few weeks, you’ll have noticed flounce fashion is particularly popular in womenswear right now. Flounces are pleated pieces of fabric that are applied to the shoulders, neckline or sleeves, for example, and drape over the body. They give clothing items an extra dimension and make them look wonderfully dynamic.

The fact that flounces are so popular right now is largely due to Chloé’s autumn 2024 collection, which was unveiled last February. It also marked Chemena Kamali’s debut as creative director of the French fashion house. Combining hippie romance and urban coolness, Chemena Kamali almost single-handedly brought back boho-chic, which was last in vogue in the noughties.

The most prominent features of the collection were the flowing, transparent dresses and blouses with sweeping flounces. Their price tag? Several thousand francs. However, as usual, the looks from this season’s hottest collection were also adopted by brands that produce mass market fashion. Some were merely inspired by Chloé, others produced bold copies.

Baroque, 70s, noughties or 2024 – flounces work

Flounces are often combined with ruffles, knotted details and flared trumpet sleeves. The main thing is that they flutter as dramatically as possible in the wind, as if they were dancing to Jefferson Airplane’s song Somebody to Love. However, flounces weren’t invented by hippies. They already adorned pompous garments in the Baroque period. And they’ve kept this majestic appeal today, however in a romantic, playful way.

Flounces look particularly beautiful on flowing silhouettes made of light fabrics such as chiffon. Combine your flounce pieces with knee-high boots, flared jeans, (suede) leather jackets and plenty of jewellery, and you’ll have that perfect chic but cool look.

No flounce fashion in your wardrobe? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!
