Blazing Beauty Tips: how to determine the perfect proportions for your eyebrows

When it comes to eyebrow make-up, I’ve always relied on my gut feeling. There’s a simple formula to help me find the ideal shape that’s tailored to my facial features.

Eyebrows are a science in itself. I was hit by this realisation again the other day during a make-up masterclass by the brand Anastasia Beverly Hills. I’d got away quite well with eyeballing it so far. But having a fixed formula to guide you is nicer. Florica Finta, Education Manager at Anastasia Beverly Hills, led the workshop at the Beauty Lab by Galaxus & En Vogue. She taught the participants what matters when it comes to proportions and how we can determine our own ideal brow length.

The golden ratio method

This method relies on the fact that our eyes recognise symmetry. Because our brows frame our face, they play a decisive role in whether we perceive someone’s facial proportions to be harmonious or not. Of course, how you wear your brows is entirely up to you. But if you need some guidance, I find this tip extremely helpful. It tells you where your eyebrows should best begin, peak and end – tailored to your face, and ignoring any current trends. It’ll have your brows blending harmoniously into your appearance. The following three reference points can be useful not only for applying make-up, but also for plucking or waxing your brows.

Determine the beginning of your eyebrow by drawing a vertical line up from the middle of your nasal wing.

Determine the highest point of your brow arch by drawing a straight line from the tip of your nose through the centre of your iris (with your eyes looking straight ahead).

Determine the end of your eyebrow by drawing a straight line from your outer nose wing through the outer corner of your eye.

Application

Don’t worry, you won’t have to whip out your triangle ruler or compass. All you need is an eyebrow pencil that you can use as a guide. Alternatively, a slanted eyebrow brush and some brow powder will do the trick. Hold the eyebrow pencil against your face according to the dotted lines on the image above. Use the pencil or brush to mark the three reference points (beginning, arch and end) on each brow. Next, connect the three dots – and get to plucking, applying your make-up, shaping or filling in your brows as usual.
