What is manna? In the Bible, manna (also referred to as heavenly dew, heavenly bread, angel's bread, and bread of the angels) is the food that is said to have sustained the Israelites during their 40-year journey through the desert. Later, manna also became a term for the mannitol-containing sap of the manna ash and other ashes. The sap contains up to 90% mannitol along with stachyose and other sugars; traces of fraxin are also present. Manna is a mild laxative and can be used, for example, for hemorrhoids and anal fissures or other conditions where a soft stool is desired for bowel movements.

In addition, mannitol has some significance as a sugar substitute for diabetics, as it is metabolized independently of insulin.
