What is the difference between the Bezzera Unica PID and the considerably cheaper Lelit Anita PL42 (https://www.galaxus.ch/de/s2/product/lelit-anita-pl42-temd-siebtraegermaschine-8702069)? What is the main distinguishing feature for me as a layman?

Hello Maxmara007
It doesn't really depend on how many espressos you drink but what kind of espresso you like to drink.
The Lelit Anita is a "normal portafilter coffee machine", the Bezzera Unica PID is an affordable entry-level model into the barista world for the best espresso. Even with only one espresso a day, I wouldn't give the machine away.
Add to that a Eureka Silenzio (which is particularly quiet), and you can get the affordable Eureka Mignon Manual for a good 300.
Add to that the espresso blend from https://www.cretti.ch (a small, fine family business that still roasts by hand). With the right adjustment of espresso machine and grinder, pure golden foam runs out of the sieve for 30 seconds :-).
Greetings Bruno

Hello Maxmara007, these are significant differences and the questions you should ask yourself are, for example:
- How many espressos do you drink a day? If you only drink 1-2, leave it alone!
- the Lelit has an integrated grinder and that's the main difference, do you want an egg-laying machine or do you like to fiddle around with a separate grinder are you the grammage (and this depends on the coffee bean), fineness, time and so on until the espresso tastes the way it tastes to you?
- If you still decide to buy a portafilter machine, then take a barista course, which will help you learn what is important, bean differences, taste, temperature, pressure, grinder, etc.
- A good, robust grinder (grinder and motor) costs easily another CHF 800. Here, too, there are various differences that you should be aware of.
Personally, I have the Bezzera and am extremely satisfied with it. I had to try out several coffee beans until I found my taste. But I have also had to replace the grinder and invest in a more expensive, better, quieter grinder.
The water also makes a huge difference. In our region, the water is hard, but in order to get Italian water conditions, I only use bought Italian water (e.g. Rochetta etc.) because the water is much softer and changes the espresso taste. As you can see, it is a philosophy in itself and whether you want to put up with all this is an important reason. Have fun and best regards, Daniele

If Bruno and Daniele couldn't convince you yet. I simply agree. With Lelit, you have a coffee machine that makes coffee. With the Bezzera Unica, you'll realise that coffee isn't just coffee; it's an experience!
There is one drawback: since we got the Bezzera, my wife and I have become so "fussy" about coffee that even in very good Italian restaurants (and in Italy, too) we look very critically at the coffee machine and the coffee before we order one!
Have fun

I have the Lelit PL42 and I am an espresso lover. In Italy I drink an espresso almost every hour ;p
With the right beans, the Lelit produces a creamy, dark espresso, 70-80% as good as the one from Italy. The Bezzera might manage 80-90%. I am very satisfied. No comparison to capsules and fully automatic machines. Next time I would probably buy a coffee machine and grinder separately. Because if the integrated grinder breaks, it's no fun.
