The battery charges during the day through sunlight and then releases the stored energy by illuminating at night. The light is automatically turned on by a twilight sensor. The house number is illuminated at 20% brightness after dusk. When someone approaches and movement is detected within the sensor's range, the light switches to 100% brightness for 15 seconds. Thus, it serves not only as house number lighting but also as a wall light.
