It has adapted well to the harsh climate and has feathers with excellent thermal performance and insulation properties. It uses its down to line the nest, protecting the delicate brood from wind and cold. After the breeding season, the down is collected from the abandoned nests. This down is particularly large, light, and soft. It has tiny branches that interlock like a fleece, creating air chambers that contribute to its high heat retention capacity.
