You’re a Dr. Martens fan? Time for an update!

Dr. Martens is undoubtedly a cult label. And yet, I’ve never owned a pair myself. This is about to change with the new «Black Velvet» model.
They’re sturdy, fitted with a thick sole and an integral part of the fashion world. You either love them or hate them – there’s nothing in between. After all, the clunkiness of Dr. Martens Boots (or «Doc Martens» for short) is not easily digestible. These masculine boots are guaranteed to shake up any style – one of the reasons they are also worn by women. Want to give your look some edge? Try combining the bother boots with floral dresses, frilly tops or long coats.

It’s no April Fool’s joke when I tell you that these British working boots were invented on 1 April 1960. Ever since Miley Cyrus swung through her music video to «Wrecking Ball» wearing nothing but wine red Dr. Martens, the boots have been back with a vengeance. Our Fashion Category Manager would tut at what I just said and correct my colour definition and point me towards the correct name «Cherry Red Smooth». But back to Miley: Maybe you were too distracted to notice the enfant terrible was wearing anything on her feet. Here’s a GIF to jog your memory.

Black Velvet
Personally, I like Doc Martens. The reason I’ve never worn them before is that they don’t really suit my style. But this has changed with the velvet model. Unlike the original leather boots, they’re not quite as tough-looking. Don’t get me wrong, they’re definitely still clunky, great in all kinds of weather and, if it’s to be believed, they’re also equipped with acid-proof soles. Might come in handy one day, you never know. After wearing them for the first time, I’m pleasantly surprised: These shoes are comfortable. I don’t even have to break them in; something I’m told is often the case with Doc Martens. What I’m not a big fan of is the wide satin shoelaces. I think I’ll just replace them with regular laces. The wide ones are just a little too girly for my liking. Thankfully, the boots come with both types of laces.

When I’m not exploring the depths of the sea as an open water diver, I enjoy plunging into the world of fashion. On the streets of Paris, Milan and New York is where I keep my eyes peeled for the latest trends. And I’ll show you how to take them from the catwalk to your everyday life.
