Is it OK to wear flip-flops to a restaurant or club?
by Laura Scholz
As soon as the sun comes out and socks and closed shoes are no longer a must, it’s flip-flop season for me. But this year I’m trying something new – and I’m sold!
Yes, I’m cheating this summer. Instead of flipping and flopping through life in my trusty Havaianas as I’ve done for years, I’m moving on with my new Crocs on my feet.
No, not the ones with the jumbo footbed, heel straps, and holes waiting to be bedazzled with Jibbitz pins. In fact, they don’t look anything like the US brand’s infamous clogs. On the contrary: they’re simple, delicate and match my beloved, minimalist flip-flop aesthetic to a tee.
Why have I decided it’s time to move on, you ask? Well, classic flip-flops, regardless of the brand, have a tricky reputation. When I wrote about them in the past, opinions were divided: while 59 per cent of readers said it was fine to wear flip-flops anywhere, 41 per cent said they were a pool-only shoe.
When I came across the Miami Toe Loop Sandal from Crocs, I sensed an opportunity. Made of plastic, they’re still suitable for the pool and beach. They’re also super light, weighing just around 130 grammes, and come with an understated look. In addition to all these similarities to your run-of-the-mill toe sandal, they also won me over with the following characteristics:
The toe loop, i.e. the strap that wraps around the big toe, is much more comfortable than the flip-flop bridge, which, at least at the beginning of every summer, causes serious chafing between the big toe and the second toe.
Crocs Croslite footbed softly cushions even the most energetic step. Not even a whole day’s stroll through the city of Barcelona caused me any discomfort – unthinkable for flip-flops.
The silhouette with its three straps, slightly thicker sole at the heel and slightly angular front is understated and chic.
If black is too basic for you, you also have the option of an off-white called Dew, the neon yellow Acidity, Pink Crush, Milk Chocolate or Lava.
