A workplace for the senses
by Pia Seidel
Although I love Pinterest and Instagram, I still use analogue pinboards to capture inspiration. It is ahead of digital solutions in one respect.
The smell of oil paint, light-flooded rooms and colourful pinboards are the first things that come to mind when I think back to the student studios at Zurich University of the Arts. During my studies, I spent more time there than at home. My studio space consisted of a desk and stool and a white presentation board. On the one hand, this was a means to an end for me: a large surface to gather inspiration for ongoing projects. On the other hand, the board was a substitute for a living room wall that I could decorate to my heart's content. I certainly had mood boards on Pinterest and Tumblr at the time. Unlike the analogue board, these couldn't embellish my niche.
The more aesthetically pleasing a pinboard is, the more of an eye-catcher it is. Designers seem to share this view and are giving boring white metal memo boards a fresh look: Soft shapes, natural materials and warm colours turn them into design objects. Some designs, for example, look more like a picture frame than a pin board. They also visually show how working environments and private spaces merge into one another. In my last article, I therefore counted modern pinboards among the things that make an office more homely.
Designs such as those from "Lintex" are magnetic like classic memo boards, but have an elegant glass surface that you can write on. They have a soft silhouette and rounded edges. A wooden frame adorns the "Bloc News board" and "A01" models. The "Bloc Glass Tafel" design is framed by a fabric in a matching colour. In addition to Lintex, other labels such as "A Simple Mess" also rely on floral patterns and muted colour tones that set their pinboards apart from conventional variants.
Memoboards made of cork are not new, but coloured versions such as those from "Smit" are. They are part of a system that allows you to combine different colours. The "Nouveau Pin" modules from "Please Wait To Be Seated", which you can hang up individually or together in other versions, work in a similar way. They look particularly elegant because their linen fabric is burgundy or olive green and their base is made of brass.
Whichever option you choose, contemporary pinboards can be integrated into any room and cannot be replaced by any digital platform.
