Bauhaus for your wall: the Wassily chair in poster form

The designer chair is still well out of my reach, so I’ll settle for a poster of it – and make a statement on my wall. With prints from Plakativ, I can bring an icon into my home without having to remodel my entire living room or drain my bank account.

Zurich-based brand Plakativ is dedicated to supporting young designers. With their production in Switzerland and a curated selection of designs, they want to make everyday life a little more beautiful.

I treated myself to a DIN A2 poster of the Wassily chair (club chair B3) – a design icon that now hangs in my home as a work of art on paper.

Plakativ offers posters for everyone who loves art and design.

Plakativ cofounder Joël Wyss sums up the idea behind the brand: «We wanted to offer young designers a platform to make their work accessible as prints – without a lot of hassle. Our curated selection shows how versatile creativity can be: from minimalist Bauhaus designs to poetic photographs and witty illustrations. Something all the pieces have in common is the joy of seeing the everyday in a new light.»

And that’s exactly what you feel when you hold one of them in your hands.

The packaging

Instead of a boring roll or a bog-standard cardboard box, the poster comes in a specially designed cardboard box. Inside, it’s carefully wrapped in tissue paper, protected from creases and dog-ears.

The moment I unwrap the poster almost feels like I’m taking a work of art straight out of a gallery. That’s why these pieces are the perfect gift – the packaging will certainly make an impression.

Framing the artwork

Rolled-up posters are often difficult to smooth out again. But this paper is surprisingly easy to unroll. I hold the back of my picture frame from Chicura with one hand and carefully smooth the paper with the other. At the same time, I slide the artwork further into the frame, little by little.

Simply insert the poster and gently smooth it out – no hassle.

If the poster weren’t so easy to unroll, I would’ve weighed it down for a few hours, or carefully pulled it over the edge of a table in the opposite direction to take the tension out of the material.

A word of warning when unrolling over edges: be careful so that no tears or pressure marks occur.

Using this method, you can smooth a poster evenly without damaging it. As soon as it’s completely unrolled, it can be easily inserted into the frame – and it looks as if it has just been rolled up, without any creases or folds. But be careful: this would be too risky for me with this type of paper, because it’s matt and uncoated. That’s why I recommend framing the picture instead of just hanging it up.

Print and printer

The paper has a matt surface, is thicker than standard paper and comes from sustainable FSC-certified production. It’s printed in Lenzburg. For me, it appears a little too white at first glance, but that’s a matter of taste, and it can look very different on a wall.

The subject – the Wassily Chair – looks lively and precise on the paper.

Since this design is black, I can’t really say whether the colours are saturated. I would have to order another picture for this. The print is razor-sharp. If it were bigger, I would have to make sure that none of my guests accidentally sit down in the «armchair» ;)

A splash of colour

In the end, I did miss a little splash of colour. I wanted to find out whether the product could be creatively embellished – so I added my own twist to it. My colleague Natalie gave me the idea. And it reminded me of this piece.

If you’re missing a bit of colour…

The result is unexpected, if not entirely successful. But it shows the product definitely leaves room for creative interpretations, if you want to customise it.

In a nutshell

Art that instantly upgrades your living space

A poster from Plakativ is the perfect gift – for others, or simply for yourself. It brings bare walls to life while supporting young up-and-coming talent on the art scene. I was impressed by the carefully considered delivery, the local printing and the easy handling.

With designs including real icons, you can get a taste of the real classics at home – and plenty of inspiration for your own interior ideas. Is the Wassily chair still a distant dream for you? Then grab the poster, and take the first step towards your interior goals for a price of around 50 francs instead of 2,000.
