10 questions for a sun protection expert
by Natalie Hemengül
When you find yourself under a hot summer sun, ice cream dripping down your hand faster than you can lick it up, you know it’s high time for some sun protection. While sunscreen is always an option, it’s not the only one. We’ve got you covered if you’re in the mood to top it all of with a hat of your liking. Take our quiz to find out whether you’ll feel best in a cap, bucket hat or wide-brimmed hat this season.
For some of you, there’s nothing worse than the thought of having to put on sunscreen. Especially in the heat, when everything is already slippery and sticky. And the risk is that if I mention the term «headgear», you’ll click out of the article faster than I can type «Give me a chance, there’s a fun quiz!!». But I’ll try anyway... Give me a chance, there’s a fun quiz!! Just a bit of patience, please.
Because whether most of you already realise it or not, protecting yourself from the sun simply makes sense. UV rays, sunburn, skin cancer, sunstroke – you know the dangers. My colleague Natalie has already explained the most important aspects of the first three for you here:
How can you protect yourself from sunstroke? That’s right. Tactically placed headgear. If you stay out too long in the sun without keeping your head covered, you can easily become overheated. Your brain membranes won’t be happy and will take revenge through headaches, nausea, fever, etc. No thank you! I’ll stick with the hat. Or cap. But which one? Now finally, the quiz.
At the lake or beach – where do you prefer to be?

If you mainly ticked A:
Had we known about you, we would’ve had you star in our recent Raffaello-inspired summer TV ad. Hats can’t be too big or too sophisticated for you. If you’re going to wear sunscreen, then you might as well make a statement. All that’s missing now is a Piña Colada and some fresh fruit – but there’s sure to be someone at the beach club who will deliver it straight to your lounger without any detours.
If you mainly ticked B:
There’s no trend you don’t know about. You baked banana bread during the lockdown, are familiar with the significance of Y2K and are in the middle of crocheting your first bucket hat. Until it’s finished, you’ll be sporting one of these hip variations:
If you mainly ticked C:
Just the thought of having to add yet another element to your outfit in this sweltering heat leaves you steaming. All this hype about sun protection is just a marketing ploy. People who wear hats are sketchy anyway. But because the after-effects of a sunstroke – hypothetically speaking – sound pretty unappealing, compromising with a stylish cap doesn’t seem so bad after all.
If you mainly ticked D:
You take precautions all year long to prevent harmful sun exposure; you wouldn’t dream of doing any differently now. Your bag of tricks for warding off UV damage in the form of sunburn, wrinkles and heat stroke includes SPF 50 and chillin’ in the shade, either under a tree or umbrella. And you have nothing against an extra-wide-brimmed hat.
