3 stylish alternatives to black
by Laura Scholz
Whether yellow, blue or red suits you depends on whether you are a cool or a warm colour type. If you know this, you can avoid bad purchases in the future.
Fashion should be fun. But with the huge selection of clothes available, I'm not surprised if you can't see the wood for the trees and find yourself standing in front of the clothes rail without a plan. Of course you should wear what you like. But if you want to get the best out of your style and avoid fashion missteps, you can't avoid getting colour advice. There are indeed shades that make you look pale. Others will make your eyes sparkle and your complexion glow. If professional colour advice is too expensive for you, you can simply follow these tips on your next shopping trip.
Is your skin rosy or does it tend to have a yellow tinge? Stylists assign people to different colour categories depending on their skin tone, hair and eye colour. They use the four seasons as a guide: While spring and autumn types have warm undertones, summer and winter types are characterised by cool shades.
Use this quick test to find out which type you are: hold gold and silver jewellery (I recommend XL earrings or a necklace) in front of your face and see which one flatters you more. Gold stands for warm colours and silver for cool colours. If the silver jewellery suits you better (cool type), you can imagine an icy landscape in the next step, whereas if the gold (warm type) flatters you more, imagine a flickering fire. The colours you see in your mind's eye in this way will make you look better.
If gold makes you glow, your complexion and hair colour will shimmer golden. Light skin tends to be beige and your freckles are golden brown. Cold types, on the other hand, will look greyish. If you tan crisply in the sun, your skin will be a peach colour. When it comes to eye colour, brown, amber and olive predominate for this type.
Spring: If your skin tends to be light and sensitive to the sun and your eyes are light blue, grey or fawn, cheerful shades such as sunny yellow, orange, terracotta, camel and coral will emphasise your natural beauty. On the other hand, you should avoid bold colours, black and white.
Autumn: If your brown or black hair has a reddish undertone, orange, mustard yellow, red, green and brown shades will suit you. In other words, autumnal colours that make you think of a walk through the forest. It's better to avoid silver jewellery, pastel pink and cool blue tones. When I think of cool colours, I think of blue tones and white. The complexion of this type is correspondingly light and tends to have a blue undertone. Your skin doesn't necessarily have to be pale, it can also have an olive undertone. You also hardly take on any colour when sunbathing. People with very light (grey, blue or green) or almost black eyes also fall into this category.
Summer: Sunbathing won't turn your complexion brown. On the contrary: you will get sunburnt. If your hair is also ashy to dark blonde, I recommend cool colours. You should avoid strong contrasts. Instead, a cool pink, pastel green and all shades of blue and grey will put you in the right light. It's better to steer clear of gold jewellery and brown.
Winter:
Do you have dark hair and a snow-white complexion with a blue undertone? Then cool winter colours such as white, black or blue are the best choice for you, although you can use them in high-contrast. Colours can also be stronger, but should be more muted. By this I mean, for example, a strong dark red, grey, blue, emerald green or cool pastel shades such as mint or light yellow. Shades of orange, on the other hand, make you look pale. Want to find out more about your colour type? A colour consultation is tailored to your individual type.
